“Take the staff and assemble the community, you and Aaron your brother, and then speak ¹  to the rock before their eyes. It will pour forth ²  its water, and you will bring water out of the rock for them, and so you will give the community and their beasts water to drink.”

And Moses removed Aaron’s garments and put them on his son Eleazar. So Aaron died there on the top of the mountain. And Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain.

“Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites, when he manifested such zeal ¹  for my sake among them, so that I did not consume the Israelites in my zeal. ² 

You must divide the land by lot for an inheritance among your families. To a larger group you must give a larger inheritance, and to a smaller group you must give a smaller inheritance. Everyone’s inheritance must be in the place where his lot falls. You must inherit according to your ancestral ¹  tribes.

They said, “The Lord commanded my lord to give ¹  the land as an inheritance by lot to the Israelites; and my lord was commanded by the Lord to give the inheritance of our brother Zelophehad to his daughters.

So Moses and Aaron took these men who had been mentioned specifically by name,

The Israelites did according to all that the Lord commanded Moses ¹  – that is what they did.

But the Levites were not numbered among the other Israelites, as the Lord commanded Moses.

¹ Now these are the records ²  of Aaron and Moses when ³  the Lord spoke with Moses on Mount Sinai.

“Bring the tribe of Levi near, ¹  and present ²  them before Aaron the priest, that they may serve him. ³ 

You are to assign ¹  the Levites to Aaron and his sons; they will be assigned exclusively ²  to him out of all ³  the Israelites.

So you are to appoint Aaron and his sons, and they will be responsible for their priesthood; ¹  but the unauthorized person ²  who comes near must be put to death.”

So Moses numbered all the firstborn males among the Israelites, as the Lord had commanded him.

So Moses took the redemption money ¹  from those who were in excess of those redeemed by the Levites.

“Take a census ¹  of the Kohathites from among the Levites, by their families and by their clans,

“Also take a census of the Gershonites, by their clans and by their families.

So Moses and Aaron and the leaders of the community numbered the Kohathites by their families and by clans,

Every man’s holy things ¹  will be his; whatever any man gives the priest will be his.’”

“‘Then the priest will write these curses on a scroll and then scrape them off into the bitter water. ¹ 

“‘Then the priest must present all these ¹  before the Lord and offer ²  his purification offering and his burnt offering.
