The disciples began to look at one another, worried and perplexed ¹  to know which of them he was talking about.

Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me? ¹  The words that I say to you, I do not speak on my own initiative, ²  but the Father residing in me performs ³  his miraculous deeds. ⁴ 

the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, ¹  because it does not see him or know him. But you know him, because he resides ²  with you and will be ³  in you.

In a little while ¹  the world will not see me any longer, but you will see me; because I live, you will live too.

“Lord,” Judas (not Judas Iscariot) ¹  said, ²  “what has happened that you are going to reveal ³  yourself to us and not to the world?”

Jesus replied, ¹  “If anyone loves me, he will obey ²  my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and take up residence with him. ³ 

The person who does not love me does not obey ¹  my words. And the word ²  you hear is not mine, but the Father’s who sent me.

“Peace I leave with you; ¹  my peace I give to you; I do not give it ²  to you as the world does. ³  Do not let your hearts be distressed or lacking in courage. ⁴ 

I will not speak with you much longer, ¹  for the ruler of this world is coming. ²  He has no power over me, ³ 

but I am doing just what the Father commanded me, so that the world may know ¹  that I love the Father. ²  Get up, let us go from here.” ³ 

You are clean already ¹  because of the word that I have spoken to you.

If you remain ¹  in me and my words remain ²  in you, ask whatever you want, and it will be done for you. ³ 

“If the world hates you, be aware ¹  that it hated me first. ² 

If you belonged to the world, ¹  the world would love you as its own. ²  However, because you do not belong to the world, ³  but I chose you out of the world, for this reason ⁴  the world hates you. ⁵ 

Remember what ¹  I told you, ‘A slave ²  is not greater than his master.’ ³  If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they obeyed ⁴  my word, they will obey ⁵  yours too.

Now this happened ¹  to fulfill the word that is written in their law, ‘They hated me without reason.’ ² 

And when he ¹  comes, he will prove the world wrong ²  concerning sin and ³  righteousness and ⁴  judgment –

and concerning judgment, ¹  because ²  the ruler of this world ³  has been condemned. ⁴ 

I tell you the solemn truth, ¹  you will weep ²  and wail, ³  but the world will rejoice; you will be sad, ⁴  but your sadness will turn into ⁵  joy.

When a woman gives birth, she has distress ¹  because her time ²  has come, but when her child is born, she no longer remembers the suffering because of her joy that a human being ³  has been born into the world. ⁴
