<p class="bodytext">Now there was a steep cliff on each side of the pass through which Jonathan intended to go to reach the Philistine garrison. One cliff was named Bozez, the other Seneh.

David came to Saul and stood before him. Saul liked him a great deal,<n id="1" /> and he became his armor bearer.

When Saul learned that David had fled to Gath, he did not mount a new search for him.p>

<p class="bodytext">Now Saul was sitting under a pomegranate tree in Migron, on the outskirts of Gibeah. The army that was with him numbered about six hundred men.

We conducted a raid on the Negev of the Kerethites, on the area of Judah, and on the Negev of Caleb. We burned Ziklag.&#8221;<n id="1" />

When Saul and his servant<n id="1" /> arrived at Gibeah, a company of prophets was coming out to meet him. Then the spirit of God rushed upon Saul<n id="2" /> and he prophesied among them.

The servant went on to answer Saul, &#8220;Look, I happen to have in my hand a quarter shekel<n id="1" /> of silver. I will give it to the man of God and he will tell us where we should go.&#8221;<n id="2" />

The shaft<n id="1" /> of his spear was like a weaver&#8217;s beam, and the iron point of his spear weighed six hundred shekels.<n id="2" /> His shield bearer was walking before him.p>

They gave him a slice of pressed figs and two bunches of raisins to eat. This greatly refreshed him,<n id="1" /> for he had not eaten food or drunk water for three days and three nights.

His mother used to make him a small robe and bring it up to him at regular intervals when she would go up with her husband to make the annual sacrifice.

<p class="bodytext">These are the gold sores that the Philistines brought as a guilt offering to the <sc>Lordsc> &#8211; one for each of the following cities: Ashdod, Gaza, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron.

They said to him, &#8220;Look, you are old, and your sons don&#8217;t follow your ways. So now appoint over us a king to lead<n id="1" /> us, just like all the other nations have.&#8221;p>

The <sc>Lordsc> said to Samuel, &#8220;Do as they say<n id="1" /> and install a king over them.&#8221; Then Samuel said to the men of Israel, &#8220;Each of you go back to his own city.&#8221;p>

&#8220;At this time tomorrow I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin. You must consecrate<n id="1" /> him as a leader over my people Israel. He will save my people from the hand of the Philistines. For I have looked with favor on my people. Their cry has reached me!&#8221;p>

Is this not the time of the wheat harvest? I will call on the <sc>Lordsc> so that he makes it thunder and rain. Realize and see what a great sin you have committed before the <sc>Lordsc> by asking for a king for yourselves.&#8221;p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">There was a man from Ramathaim Zophim,<n id="1" /> from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah. He was the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.

The man&#8217;s name was Nabal,<n id="1" /> and his wife&#8217;s name was Abigail. She was both wise<n id="2" /> and beautiful, but the man was harsh and his deeds were evil. He was a Calebite.p>

The king said to her, &#8220;Don&#8217;t be afraid! What have you seen?&#8221; The woman replied to Saul, &#8220;I have seen one like a god<n id="1" /> coming up from the ground!&#8221;

<p class="bodytext">But Hannah replied, &#8220;That&#8217;s not the way it is,<n id="1" /> my lord! I am under a great deal of stress.<n id="2" /> I have drunk neither wine nor beer. Rather, I have poured out my soul to<n id="3" /> the <sc>Lordsc>.

<p class="bodytext">So Saul said to Jonathan, &#8220;Tell me what you have done.&#8221; Jonathan told him, &#8220;I used the end of the staff that was in my hand to taste a little honey. I must die!&#8221;<n id="1" />
