Then the Lord God commanded ¹  the man, “You may freely eat ²  fruit ³  from every tree of the orchard,

Pairs ¹  of clean animals, of unclean animals, of birds, and of everything that creeps along the ground,

They got their gifts ready for Joseph’s arrival ¹  at noon, for they had heard ²  that they were to have a meal ³  there.

So they gathered it each morning, ¹  each person according to what he could eat, and when the sun got hot, it would melt. ² 

“‘Now if an animal ¹  that you may eat dies, ²  whoever touches its carcass will be unclean until the evening.

Also you must offer fellowship offerings and eat them there, rejoicing before the Lord your God.

They were not yet filled up, ¹  their food was still in their mouths,

Arrange the table, lay out ¹  the carpet, eat and drink! ²  Get up, you officers, smear oil on the shields! ³ 

And now when you eat and drink, are you not doing so for yourselves?’”

When the Pharisees ¹  saw this they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” ² 

He ¹  answered, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me ²  will betray me.

He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who dips his hand ¹  with me into the bowl. ² 

But ¹  the Pharisees ²  and the experts in the law ³  were complaining, ⁴  “This man welcomes ⁵  sinners and eats with them.”

When they had eaten enough to be satisfied, ¹  they lightened the ship by throwing the wheat ²  into the sea.

If I partake with thankfulness, why am I blamed for the food ¹  that I give thanks for?

A person should examine himself first, ¹  and in this way ²  let him eat the bread and drink of the cup.

For the one who eats and drinks without careful regard ¹  for the body eats and drinks judgment against himself.
