for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them: ¹  “Have courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.”

(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they perform a ritual washing, ¹  holding fast to the tradition of the elders.

Then ¹  James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him and said, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask.”

Then ¹  Jesus said to him, ²  “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man replied, “Rabbi, ³  let me see again.” ⁴ 

He said, “Abba, ¹  Father, all things are possible for you. Take this cup ²  away from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”

Pilate was surprised that he was already dead. He ¹  called the centurion and asked him if he had been dead for some time.

For whoever has will be given more, but ¹  whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.” ² 

When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of pieces did you pick up?” They replied, “Twelve.”

“When I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many baskets full of pieces did you pick up?” They replied, ¹  “Seven.”

For I tell you the truth, ¹  whoever gives you a cup of water because ²  you bear Christ’s ³  name will never lose his reward.

Then ¹  Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ ² 

Send them away so that they can go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy something for themselves to eat.”

“You must watch out for yourselves. You will be handed over ¹  to councils ²  and beaten in the synagogues. ³  You will stand before governors and kings ⁴  because of me, as a witness to them.

Joseph of Arimathea, a highly regarded member of the council, ¹  who was himself looking forward to ²  the kingdom of God, ³  went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. ⁴ 

Sighing deeply in his spirit he said, “Why does this generation look for a sign? I tell you the truth, ¹  no sign will be given to this generation.”

The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find anything.

Because he wanted to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them. Then, ¹  after he had Jesus flogged, ²  he handed him over ³  to be crucified.

When they heard this, they were delighted ¹  and promised to give him money. ²  So ³  Judas ⁴  began looking for an opportunity to betray him.

Then ¹  he came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn’t you stay awake for one hour?

He said to her, “Let the children be satisfied first, for it is not right to take the children’s bread and to throw it to the dogs.” ¹
