<p class="bodytext">Then<n id="1" /> John testified,<n id="2" /> &#8220;I saw the Spirit descending like a dove<n id="3" /> from heaven,<n id="4" /> and it remained on him.<n id="5" />

<p class="bodytext">Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and exclaimed,<n id="1" /> &#8220;Look, a true Israelite <i>in whom there is no deceit!i>&#8221;<n id="2" />

Then the Jewish leaders<n id="1" /> said to him, &#8220;This temple has been under construction<n id="2" /> for forty-six years,<n id="3" /> and are you going to raise it up in three days?&#8221;

The woman said to him, &#8220;Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw<n id="1" /> water.&#8221;<n id="2" />

So he asked them the time<n id="1" /> when his condition began to improve,<n id="2" /> and<n id="3" /> they told him, &#8220;Yesterday at one o&#8217;clock in the afternoon<n id="4" /> the fever left him.&#8221;

Then Jesus, because he knew they were going to come and seize him by force to make him king, withdrew again up the mountainside alone.<n id="1" />p>

Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat came to the land where they had been heading.p>

The one who eats<n id="1" /> my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.<n id="2" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">After this<n id="1" /> Jesus traveled throughout Galilee.<n id="2" /> He<n id="3" /> stayed out of Judea<n id="4" /> because the Jewish leaders<n id="5" /> wanted<n id="6" /> to kill him.

Yet many of the crowd<n id="1" /> believed in him and said, &#8220;Whenever the Christ<n id="2" /> comes, he won&#8217;t perform more miraculous signs than this man did, will he?&#8221;<n id="3" />p>

<p class="bodytext">The Pharisees<n id="1" /> heard the crowd<n id="2" /> murmuring these things about Jesus,<n id="3" /> so the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers<n id="4" /> to arrest him.<n id="5" />

(Now he said this about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were going to receive, for the Spirit had not yet been given,<n id="1" /> because Jesus was not yet glorified.)<n id="2" />p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">Then the officers<n id="1" /> returned<n id="2" /> to the chief priests and Pharisees,<n id="3" /> who said to them, &#8220;Why didn&#8217;t you bring him back with you?&#8221;<n id="4" />

Early in the morning he came to the temple courts again. All the people came to him, and he sat down and began to teach<n id="1" /> them.

(Now they were asking this in an attempt to trap him, so that they could bring charges against<n id="1" /> him.)<n id="2" /> Jesus bent down and wrote on the ground with his finger.<n id="3" />

When they persisted in asking him, he stood up straight<n id="1" /> and replied,<n id="2" /> &#8220;Whoever among you is guiltless<n id="3" /> may be the first to throw a stone at her.&#8221;

(Jesus<n id="1" /> spoke these words near the offering box<n id="2" /> while he was teaching in the temple courts.<n id="3" /> No one seized him because his time<n id="4" /> had not yet come.)<n id="5" />p>

&#8220;We are descendants<n id="1" /> of Abraham,&#8221; they replied,<n id="2" /> &#8220;and have never been anyone&#8217;s slaves! How can you say,<n id="3" /> &#8216;You will become free&#8217;?&#8221;

His disciples asked him,<n id="1" /> &#8220;Rabbi, who committed the sin that caused him to be born blind, this man<n id="2" /> or his parents?&#8221;<n id="3" />

<p class="bodytext">Then the neighbors and the people who had seen him previously<n id="1" /> as a beggar began saying,<n id="2" /> &#8220;Is this not the man<n id="3" /> who used to sit and beg?&#8221;
