Now take your positions, so I may confront you<n id="1" /> before the <sc>Lordsc> regarding all the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s just actions toward you and your ancestors.<n id="2" />

<p class="bodytext">So Samuel called to the <sc>Lordsc>, and the <sc>Lordsc> made it thunder and rain that day. All the people were very afraid of both the <sc>Lordsc> and Samuel.

However, fear the <sc>Lordsc> and serve him faithfully with all your heart. Just look at the great things he has done for you!

<p class="bodytext">Jonathan attacked the Philistine outpost<n id="1" /> that was at Geba and the Philistines heard about it. Then Saul alerted<n id="2" /> all the land saying, &#8220;Let the Hebrews pay attention!&#8221;

All Israel heard this message,<n id="1" /> &#8220;Saul has attacked the Philistine outpost, and now Israel is repulsive<n id="2" /> to the Philistines!&#8221; So the people were summoned to join<n id="3" /> Saul at Gilgal.p>

Some of the Hebrews crossed over the Jordan River<n id="1" /> to the land of Gad and Gilead. But Saul stayed at Gilgal; the entire army that was with him was terrified.

<p class="bodytext">A blacksmith could not be found in all the land of Israel, for the Philistines had said, &#8220;This will prevent the Hebrews from making swords and spears.&#8221;

So all Israel had to go down to the Philistines in order to get their plowshares, cutting instruments, axes, and sickles<n id="1" /> sharpened.

His armor bearer said to him, &#8220;Do everything that is on your mind.<n id="1" /> Do as you&#8217;re inclined. I&#8217;m with you all the way!&#8221;<n id="2" />p>

<p class="bodytext">Then fear overwhelmed<n id="1" /> those who were in the camp, those who were in the field, all the army in the garrison, and the raiding bands. They trembled and the ground shook. This fear was caused by God.<n id="2" />p>

<p class="bodytext">Saul and all the army that was with him assembled and marched into battle, where they found<n id="1" /> the Philistines in total panic killing one another with their swords.<n id="2" />

When all the Israelites who had hidden themselves in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines had fled, they too pursued them in battle.

<p class="bodytext">Then Saul said, &#8220;All you leaders of the army come here. Find out<n id="1" /> how this sin occurred today.

For as surely as the <sc>Lordsc>, the deliverer of Israel, lives, even if it turns out to be my own son Jonathan, he will certainly die!&#8221; But no one from the army said anything.<n id="1" />p>

and all this assembly will know that it is not by sword or spear that the <sc>Lordsc> saves! For the battle is the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s, and he will deliver you into our hand.&#8221;p>

Saul became even more afraid of him.<n id="1" /> Saul continued to be at odds with David from then on.<n id="2" />

<n id="1" /> Then the leaders of the Philistines would march out, and as often as they did so, David achieved more success than all of Saul&#8217;s servants. His name was held in high esteem.p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">Then Saul told his son Jonathan and all his servants to kill David. But Saul&#8217;s son Jonathan liked David very much.<n id="1" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">So David left there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and the rest of his father&#8217;s family<n id="1" /> learned about it, they went down there to him.

<p class="bodytext">Ahimelech replied to the king, &#8220;Who among all your servants is faithful like David? He is the king&#8217;s son-in-law, the leader of your bodyguard, and honored in your house!
