When Moses told<n id="1" /> these things to all the Israelites, the people mourned<n id="2" /> greatly.p>

But Moses said, &#8220;Why<n id="1" /> are you now transgressing the commandment<n id="2" /> of the <sc>Lordsc>? It will not succeed!

Then Moses summoned<n id="1" /> Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, but they said, &#8220;We will not come up.<n id="2" />

Then Moses got up<n id="1" /> and went to Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel went after him.

Then Moses and Aaron stood before the tent of meeting.p>

Then Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance of the tent of meeting, and the plague was stopped.p>

Then Moses placed the staffs before the <sc>Lordsc> in the tent of the testimony.<n id="1" />p>

So Moses did as the <sc>Lordsc> commanded him &#8211; this is what he did.p>

<p class="bodytext">The Israelites said to Moses, &#8220;We are bound to die!<n id="1" /> We perish, we all perish!

<p class="bodytext">And there was no water for the community, and so they gathered themselves together against Moses and Aaron.

The people contended<n id="1" /> with Moses, saying,<n id="2" /> &#8220;If only<n id="3" /> we had died when our brothers died before the <sc>Lordsc>!

<p class="bodytext">So Moses did as the <sc>Lordsc> commanded; and they went up Mount Hor in the sight<n id="1" /> of the whole community.

Moses sent spies to reconnoiter<n id="1" /> Jaazer, and they captured its villages<n id="2" /> and dispossessed the Amorites who were there.p>

So Moses said to the judges of Israel, &#8220;Each of you must execute those of his men<n id="1" /> who were joined to Baal-peor.&#8221;p>

So Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them in the plains of Moab, by the Jordan River<n id="1" /> across from Jericho.<n id="2" /> They said,

He laid his hands on him and commissioned him, just as the <sc>Lordsc> commanded,<n id="1" /> by the authority<n id="2" /> of Moses.p>

They fought against the Midianites, as the <sc>Lordsc> commanded Moses, and they killed every male.<n id="1" />

Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the community went out to meet them outside the camp.p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">But Moses was furious with the officers of the army, the commanders over thousands and commanders over hundreds, who had come from service in the war.
