“Hear me, my lord. The land is worth ¹  400 pieces of silver, ²  but what is that between me and you? So bury your dead.”

When ¹  Esau was forty years old, ²  he married ³  Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, as well as Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite.

You will live by your sword but you will serve your brother. When you grow restless, you will tear off his yoke from your neck.” ¹ 

Let me take my wives and my children whom I have acquired by working for you. ¹  Then I’ll depart, ²  because you know how hard I’ve worked for you.” ³ 

Jacob’s sons answered Shechem and his father Hamor deceitfully when they spoke because Shechem ¹  had violated their sister Dinah.

Then we will give ¹  you our daughters to marry, ²  and we will take your daughters as wives for ourselves, and we will live among you and become one people.

The land I gave ¹  to Abraham and Isaac I will give to you. To your descendants ²  I will also give this land.”

Esau took his wives from the Canaanites: ¹  Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Oholibamah the daughter of Anah and granddaughter ²  of Zibeon the Hivite,

So Jacob ¹  said to him, “Go now and check on ²  the welfare ³  of your brothers and of the flocks, and bring me word.” So Jacob ⁴  sent him from the valley of Hebron.

Pharaoh was enraged with his servants, and he put me in prison in the house of the captain of the guards – me and the chief baker.

Pharaoh also said to Joseph, “I am Pharaoh, but without your permission ¹  no one ²  will move his hand or his foot ³  in all the land of Egypt.”

Joseph named the firstborn Manasseh, ¹  saying, ²  “Certainly ³  God has made me forget all my trouble and all my father’s house.”

But Jacob did not send Joseph’s brother Benjamin with his brothers, ¹  for he said, ²  “What if some accident ³  happens ⁴  to him?”

Their father Jacob said to them, “You are making me childless! Joseph is gone. ¹  Simeon is gone. ²  And now you want to take ³  Benjamin! Everything is against me.”

Take double the money with you; ¹  you must take back ²  the money that was returned in the mouths of your sacks – perhaps it was an oversight.

May the sovereign God ¹  grant you mercy before the man so that he may release ²  your other brother ³  and Benjamin! As for me, if I lose my children I lose them.” ⁴ 

So the men took these gifts, and they took double the money with them, along with Benjamin. Then they hurried down to Egypt ¹  and stood before Joseph.

So tell ¹  my father about all my honor in Egypt and about everything you have seen. But bring my father down here quickly!” ² 

Get your father and your households and come to me! Then I will give you ¹  the best land in Egypt and you will eat ²  the best ³  of the land.’

Jacob and all his descendants took their livestock and the possessions they had acquired in the land of Canaan, and they went to Egypt. ¹
