He leans against his house but it does not hold up, ¹  he takes hold ²  of it but it does not stand.

Nor is there an arbiter ¹  between us, who ²  might lay ³  his hand on us both, ⁴ 

“But turn, all of you, ¹  and come ²  now! ³  I will not find a wise man among you.

“If ¹  I cry out, ²  ‘Violence!’ ³  I receive no answer; ⁴  I cry for help, but there is no justice.

They reap fodder ¹  in the field, and glean ²  in the vineyard of the wicked.

if ¹  the members of my household ²  have never said, ³  ‘If only there were ⁴  someone who has not been satisfied from Job’s ⁵  meat!’ –

I will not show partiality to anyone, ¹  nor will I confer a title ²  on any man.

Indeed, God is mighty; and he does not despise people, ¹  he ²  is mighty, and firm ³  in his intent. ⁴ 

Who has prescribed his ways for him? Or said to him, ‘You have done what is wicked’?

Do you know about the balancing ¹  of the clouds, that wondrous activity of him who is perfect in knowledge?

After this Job lived 140 years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation.

When Job’s three friends heard about all this calamity that had happened to him, each of them came from his own country ²  – Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. ³  They met together ⁴  to come to show sympathy ⁵  for him and to console ⁶  him.

and suddenly ¹  a great wind ²  swept across ³  the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people, and they died! And I – only I alone – escaped to tell you!”

But when they gazed intently ¹  from a distance but did not recognize ²  him, they began to weep loudly. Each of them tore his robes, and they threw dust into the air over their heads. ³ 

So I ¹  waste away like something rotten, ²  like a garment eaten by moths.

His memory perishes from the earth, he has no name in the land. ¹ 

The righteous see their destruction ¹  and rejoice; the innocent mock them scornfully, ²  saying,

“Even today my complaint is still bitter; ¹  his ²  hand is heavy despite ³  my groaning.

¹ Yet God ²  finds occasions ³  with me; he regards me as his enemy!

so that the godless man should not rule, and not lay snares for the people. ¹
