I also have understanding ¹  as well as you; I am not inferior to you. ²  Who does not know such things as these? ³ 

he who ¹  crushes ²  me with a tempest, and multiplies my wounds for no reason. ³ 

Indeed, these are but the outer fringes of his ways! ¹  How faint is the whisper ²  we hear of him! But who can understand the thunder of his power?”

The drought as well as the heat carry away the melted snow; ¹  so the grave ²  takes away those who have sinned. ³ 

Did not the one who made me in the womb make them? ¹  Did not the same one form us in the womb?

I chose ¹  the way for them ²  and sat as their chief; ³  I lived like a king among his troops; I was like one who comforts mourners. ⁴ 

For the company of the godless is barren, ¹  and fire ²  consumes the tents of those who accept bribes. ³ 

You who tear yourself ¹  to pieces in your anger, will the earth be abandoned ²  for your sake? Or will a rock be moved from its place? ³ 

who shows no partiality to princes, and does not take note of ¹  the rich more than the poor, because all of them are the work of his hands?

The eye of him who sees me now will see me no more; ¹  your eyes will look for me, but I will be gone. ² 

“But now they mock me, those who are younger ¹  than I, whose fathers I disdained too much ²  to put with my sheep dogs. ³ 

although you know ¹  that I am not guilty, and that there is no one who can deliver ²  out of your hand?

If it is a matter of strength, ¹  most certainly ²  he is the strong one! And if it is a matter of justice, he will say, ‘Who will summon me?’ ³ 

If a land ¹  has been given into the hand of a wicked man, ²  he covers ³  the faces of its judges; ⁴  if it is not he, then who is it? ⁵ 

who ¹  would take his ²  rod ³  away from me so that his terror ⁴  would not make me afraid.

But it was he ¹  who filled their houses with good things – yet the counsel of the wicked ²  was far from me. ³ 

² There was a man ³  in the land of Uz ⁴  whose ⁵  name was Job. ⁶  And that man was pure ⁷  and upright, ⁸  one who feared God and turned away from evil. ⁹ 

So the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered ¹  my servant Job? There ²  is no one like him on the earth, a pure and upright man, one who fears God and turns away ³  from evil.”

People ¹  who had seen him will not see him again, and the place where he was will recognize him no longer.

Nowhere in all the land could women be found who were as beautiful as Job’s daughters, and their father granted them an inheritance alongside their brothers.
