<t /><p class="bodytext">From Simeon<n id="1" /> Peter,<n id="2" /> a slave<n id="3" /> and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who through the righteousness of our God<n id="4" /> and Savior,<n id="5" /> Jesus Christ, have been granted<n id="6" /> a faith just as precious<n id="7" /> as ours.

<p class="bodytext">Then the disciple whom<n id="1" /> Jesus loved<n id="2" /> said to Peter, &#8220;It is the Lord!&#8221; So Simon Peter, when he heard that it was the Lord, tucked in his outer garment (for he had nothing on underneath it),<n id="3" /> and plunged<n id="4" /> into the sea.

<t /><p class="bodytext">As<n id="1" /> he was walking by the Sea of Galilee he saw two brothers, Simon (called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea (for they were fishermen).<n id="2" />

Now these are the names of the twelve apostles:<n id="1" /> first, Simon<n id="2" /> (called Peter), and Andrew his brother; James son of Zebedee and John his brother;

And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades<n id="1" /> will not overpower it.

But he turned and said to Peter, &#8220;Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me, because you are not setting your mind on God&#8217;s interests, but on man&#8217;s.&#8221;<n id="1" />

So<n id="1" /> Peter said<n id="2" /> to Jesus, &#8220;Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you want, I will make<n id="3" /> three shelters<n id="4" /> &#8211; one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.&#8221;

After<n id="1" /> a little while, those standing there came up to Peter and said, &#8220;You really are one of them too &#8211; even your accent<n id="2" /> gives you away!&#8221;

But after turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, &#8220;Get behind me, Satan. You are not setting your mind on God&#8217;s interests, but on man&#8217;s.&#8221;<n id="1" />p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">Six days later<n id="1" /> Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John and led them alone up a high mountain privately. And he was transfigured before them,<n id="2" />

So<n id="1" /> Peter said to Jesus,<n id="2" /> &#8220;Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us make three shelters<n id="3" /> &#8211; one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.&#8221;

And Peter had followed him from a distance, up to the high priest&#8217;s courtyard. He<n id="1" /> was sitting with the guards<n id="2" /> and warming himself by the fire.

Immediately a rooster<n id="1" /> crowed a second time. Then<n id="2" /> Peter remembered what Jesus had said to him: &#8220;Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.&#8221; And he broke down and wept.<n id="3" />p>

Then<n id="1" /> Jesus asked,<n id="2" /> &#8220;Who was it who touched me?&#8221; When they all denied it, Peter<n id="3" /> said, &#8220;Master, the crowds are surrounding you and pressing<n id="4" /> against you!&#8221;

Now when he came to the house, Jesus<n id="1" /> did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John,<n id="2" /> and James, and the child&#8217;s father and mother.

Now Peter and those with him were quite sleepy,<n id="1" /> but as they became fully awake,<n id="2" /> they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.

But Peter got up and ran to the tomb.<n id="1" /> He bent down<n id="2" /> and saw only the strips of linen cloth;<n id="3" /> then he went home,<n id="4" /> wondering<n id="5" /> what had happened.<n id="6" />p>

Andrew brought Simon<n id="1" /> to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, &#8220;You are Simon, the son of John.<n id="2" /> You will be called Cephas&#8221; (which is translated Peter).<n id="3" />p>

Peter said to him, &#8220;You will never wash my feet!&#8221;<n id="1" /> Jesus replied,<n id="2" /> &#8220;If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.&#8221;<n id="3" />

<p class="bodytext">Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, pulled it out and struck the high priest&#8217;s slave,<n id="1" /> cutting off his right ear.<n id="2" /> (Now the slave&#8217;s name was Malchus.)<n id="3" />
