<p class="bodytext">Moses said, &#8220;You will know this<n id="1" /> when the <sc>Lordsc> gives you<n id="2" /> meat to eat in the evening and bread in the morning to satisfy you, because the <sc>Lordsc> has heard your murmurings that you are murmuring against him. As for us, what are we?<n id="3" /> Your murmurings are not against us,<n id="4" /> but against the <sc>Lordsc>.&#8221;p>

&#8220;I have heard the murmurings of the Israelites. Tell them, &#8216;During the evening<n id="1" /> you will eat meat,<n id="2" /> and in the morning you will be satisfied<n id="3" /> with bread, so that you may know<n id="4" /> that I am the <sc>Lordsc> your God.&#8217;&#8221;<n id="5" />p>

When Moses&#8217; father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he said, &#8220;What is this<n id="1" /> that you are doing for the people?<n id="2" /> Why are you sitting by yourself, and all the people stand around you from morning until evening?&#8221;p>

In the tent of meeting<n id="1" /> outside the curtain that is before the testimony, Aaron and his sons are to arrange it from evening<n id="2" /> to morning before the <sc>Lordsc>. This is to be a lasting ordinance among the Israelites for generations to come.<n id="3" />p>

&#8220;This is the offering of Aaron and his sons which they must present to the <sc>Lordsc> on the day when he is anointed: a tenth of an ephah<n id="1" /> of choice wheat flour<n id="2" /> as a continual grain offering, half of it in the morning and half of it in the evening.

Also, anything they fall on<n id="1" /> when they die will become unclean &#8211; any wood vessel or garment or article of leather or sackcloth. Any such vessel with which work is done must be immersed in water<n id="2" /> and will be unclean until the evening. Then it will become clean.

And they observed the Passover<n id="1" /> on the fourteenth day of the first month at twilight in the wilderness of Sinai; in accordance with all that the <sc>Lordsc> had commanded Moses, so the Israelites did.p>

but you must sacrifice it<n id="1" /> in the evening in<n id="2" /> the place where he<n id="3" /> chooses to locate his name, at sunset, the time of day you came out of Egypt.

<p class="bodytext">Joshua tore his clothes;<n id="1" /> he and the leaders<n id="2" /> of Israel lay face down on the ground before the ark of the <sc>Lordsc> until evening<n id="3" /> and threw dirt on their heads.<n id="4" />

<p class="bodytext">But then an old man passed by, returning at the end of the day from his work in the field.<n id="1" /> The man was from the Ephraimite hill country; he was living temporarily in Gibeah. (The residents of the town were Benjaminites.)<n id="2" />

The Israelites went up and wept before the <sc>Lordsc> until evening. They asked the <sc>Lordsc>, &#8220;Should we<n id="1" /> again march out to fight<n id="2" /> the Benjaminites, our brothers?&#8221;<n id="3" /> The <sc>Lordsc> said, &#8220;Attack them!&#8221;<n id="4" />

<p class="bodytext">So all the Israelites, the whole army,<n id="1" /> went up to<n id="2" /> Bethel.<n id="3" /> They wept and sat there before the <sc>Lordsc>; they did not eat anything<n id="4" /> that day until evening. They offered up burnt sacrifices and tokens of peace<n id="5" /> to the <sc>Lordsc>.

<t /><p class="bodytext">Now the men of Israel were hard pressed that day, for Saul had made the army agree to this oath: &#8220;Cursed be the man who eats food before evening! I will get my vengeance on my enemies!&#8221; So no one in the army ate anything.p>

<p class="bodytext">David said to Jonathan, &#8220;Tomorrow is the new moon, and I am certainly expected to join the king for a meal.<n id="1" /> You must send me away so I can hide in the field until the third evening from now.

But David struck them down from twilight until the following evening. None of them escaped, with the exception of four hundred young men who got away on camels.<n id="1" />

They lamented and wept and fasted until evening because Saul, his son Jonathan, the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s people, and the house of Israel had fallen by the sword.p>

One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of his palace.<n id="1" /> From the roof he saw a woman bathing. Now this woman was very attractive.<n id="2" />

Look, I am ready to build a temple to honor<n id="1" /> the <sc>Lordsc> my God and to dedicate it to him in order to burn fragrant incense before him, to set out the bread that is regularly displayed,<n id="2" /> and to offer burnt sacrifices each morning and evening, and on Sabbaths, new moon festivals, and at other times appointed by the <sc>Lordsc> our God. This is something Israel must do on a permanent basis.<n id="3" />

In the evening she went, and in the morning she returned to a separate part<n id="1" /> of the harem, to the authority of Shaashgaz the king&#8217;s eunuch who was overseeing the concubines. She would not go back to the king unless the king was pleased with her<n id="2" /> and she was requested by name.p>

<p class="poetry">Sow your seed in the morning,p> <p class="poetry">and do not stop working<n id="1" /> until the evening;<n id="2" />p> <p class="poetry">for you do not know which activity<n id="3" /> will succeed<n id="4" /> &#8211;p> <p class="poetry">whether this one or that one, or whether both will prosper equally.<n id="5" />p>
