When Jacob saw them, he exclaimed,<n id="1" /> &#8220;This is the camp of God!&#8221; So he named that place Mahanaim.<n id="2" />p>

&#8220;No longer will your name be Jacob,&#8221; the man told him,<n id="1" /> &#8220;but Israel,<n id="2" /> because you have fought<n id="3" /> with God and with men and have prevailed.&#8221;p>

So Jacob named the place Peniel,<n id="1" /> explaining,<n id="2" /> &#8220;Certainly<n id="3" /> I have seen God face to face<n id="4" /> and have survived.&#8221;<n id="5" />p>

Please take my present<n id="1" /> that was brought to you, for God has been generous<n id="2" /> to me and I have all I need.&#8221;<n id="3" /> When Jacob urged him, he took it.<n id="4" />p>

and they started on their journey.<n id="1" /> The surrounding cities were afraid of God,<n id="2" /> and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob.p>

Then God said to him, &#8220;I am the sovereign God.<n id="1" /> Be fruitful and multiply! A nation &#8211; even a company of nations &#8211; will descend from you; kings will be among your descendants!<n id="2" />

So Pharaoh said to Joseph, &#8220;Because God has enabled you to know all this, there is no one as wise and discerning<n id="1" /> as you are!

Joseph named the firstborn Manasseh,<n id="1" /> saying,<n id="2" /> &#8220;Certainly<n id="3" /> God has made me forget all my trouble and all my father&#8217;s house.&#8221;

Now, do not be upset and do not be angry with yourselves because you sold me here,<n id="1" /> for God sent me<n id="2" /> ahead of you to preserve life!

Joseph said to his father, &#8220;They are the<n id="1" /> sons God has given me in this place.&#8221; His father<n id="2" /> said, &#8220;Bring them to me so I may bless them.&#8221;<n id="3" />

Israel said to Joseph, &#8220;I never expected<n id="1" /> to see you<n id="2" /> again, but now God has allowed me to see your children<n id="3" /> too.&#8221;p>

So he blessed them that day, saying,p> <p class="poetry">&#8220;By you<n id="1" /> will Israel bless,<n id="2" /> saying,p> <p class="poetry">&#8216;May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.&#8217;&#8221;p> <p class="bodytext">So he put Ephraim before Manasseh.<n id="3" />p>

<p class="bodytext">Then Israel said to Joseph, &#8220;I am about to die, but God will be with you<n id="1" /> and will bring you back to the land of your fathers.

As for you, you meant to harm me,<n id="1" /> but God intended it for a good purpose, so he could preserve the lives of many people, as you can see this day.<n id="2" />

Joseph made the sons of Israel swear an oath. He said, &#8220;God will surely come to you. Then you must carry my bones up from this place.&#8221;

<p class="bodytext">God said, &#8220;Let the land produce vegetation:<n id="1" /> plants yielding seeds according to their kinds,<n id="2" /> and<n id="3" /> trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds.&#8221; It was so.

<p class="bodytext">Then God said, &#8220;Let us make<n id="1" />p> <p class="bodytext">humankind<n id="2" /> in our image, after our likeness,<n id="3" /> so they may rule<n id="4" /> over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the cattle, and over all the earth,<n id="5" /> and over all the creatures that move<n id="6" /> on the earth.&#8221;p>

Then God said, &#8220;I now<n id="1" /> give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the entire earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.<n id="2" />

<p class="bodytext">Now<n id="1" /> no shrub of the field had yet grown on the earth, and no plant of the field<n id="2" /> had yet sprouted, for the <sc>Lordsc> God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground.<n id="3" />

The <sc>Lordsc> God made all kinds of trees grow from the soil,<n id="1" /> every tree that was pleasing to look at<n id="2" /> and good for food. (Now<n id="3" /> the tree of life<n id="4" /> and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil<n id="5" /> were in the middle of the orchard.)p>
