<t /><p class="bodytext">Then Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people: &#8220;Pay attention to all the commandments<n id="1" /> I am giving<n id="2" /> you today.

<p class="bodytext">Then Moses and the Levitical priests spoke to all Israel: &#8220;Be quiet and pay attention, Israel. Today you have become the people of the <sc>Lordsc> your God.

&#8216;Cursed is the one<n id="1" /> who makes a carved or metal image &#8211; something abhorrent<n id="2" /> to the <sc>Lordsc>, the work of the craftsman<n id="3" /> &#8211; and sets it up in a secret place.&#8217; Then all the people will say, &#8216;Amen!&#8217;<n id="4" />

&#8216;Cursed is the one who has sexual relations with<n id="1" /> his father&#8217;s former wife,<n id="2" /> for he dishonors his father.&#8217;<n id="3" /> Then all the people will say, &#8216;Amen!&#8217;

&#8216;Cursed is the one who has sexual relations with his sister, the daughter of either his father or mother.&#8217; Then all the people will say, &#8216;Amen!&#8217;

&#8216;Cursed is the one who refuses to keep the words of this law.&#8217; Then all the people will say, &#8216;Amen!&#8217;p>

Your sons and daughters will be given to another people while you look on in vain all day, and you will be powerless to do anything about it.<n id="1" />

As for the produce of your land and all your labor, a people you do not know will consume it, and you will be nothing but oppressed and crushed for the rest of your lives.

Moreover, the <sc>Lordsc> will bring upon you every kind of sickness and plague not mentioned in this scroll of commandments,<n id="1" /> until you have perished.

<t /><p class="bodytext">&#8220;Therefore, keep the terms<n id="1" /> of this covenant and obey them so that you may be successful in everything you do.

You are standing today, all of you, before the <sc>Lordsc> your God &#8211; the heads of your tribes,<n id="1" /> your elders, your officials, every Israelite man,

Then all the nations will ask, &#8220;Why has the <sc>Lordsc> done all this to this land? What is this fierce, heated display of anger<n id="1" /> all about?&#8221;

That is why the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s anger erupted against this land, bringing on it all the curses<n id="1" /> written in this scroll.

Secret things belong to the <sc>Lordsc> our God, but those that are revealed belong to us and our descendants<n id="1" /> forever, so that we might obey all the words of this law.p>

Then the <sc>Lordsc> your God will put all these curses on your enemies, on those who hate you and persecute you.

You will return and obey the <sc>Lordsc>, keeping all his commandments I am giving<n id="1" /> you today.

But I will certainly<n id="1" /> hide myself at that time because of all the wickedness they<n id="2" /> will have done by turning to other gods.

Gather to me all your tribal elders and officials so I can speak to them directly about these things and call the heavens and the earth to witness against them.

<p class="poetry">As for the Rock,<n id="1" /> his work is perfect,p> <p class="poetry">for all his ways are just.p> <p class="poetry">He is a reliable God who is never unjust,p> <p class="poetry">he is fair<n id="2" /> and upright.p>

<p class="poetry">But I fear the reaction<n id="1" /> of their enemies,p> <p class="poetry">for<n id="2" /> their adversaries would misunderstandp> <p class="poetry">and say, &#8220;Our power is great,<n id="3" />p> <p class="poetry">and the <sc>Lordsc> has not done all this!&#8221;&#8217;p>
