So ¹  it seemed good to me as well, ²  because I have followed ³  all things carefully from the beginning, to write an orderly account ⁴  for you, most excellent Theophilus,

She had lived as a widow since then for eighty-four years. ¹  She never left the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. ² 

At that moment, ¹  she came up to them ²  and began to give thanks to God and to speak ³  about the child ⁴  to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem. ⁵ 

So ¹  Jesus, when he began his ministry, ²  was about thirty years old. He was ³  the son (as was supposed) ⁴  of Joseph, the son ⁵  of Heli,

where for forty days he endured temptations ¹  from the devil. He ²  ate nothing ³  during those days, and when they were completed, ⁴  he was famished.

“Blessed are you who hunger ¹  now, for you will be satisfied. ²  “Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. ³ 

Rejoice in that day, and jump for joy, because ¹  your reward is great in heaven. For their ancestors ²  did the same things to the prophets. ³ 

“Woe to you who are well satisfied with food ¹  now, for you will be hungry. “Woe to you ²  who laugh ³  now, for you will mourn and weep.

Then ¹  a man named Jairus, who was a ruler ²  of the synagogue, ³  came up. Falling ⁴  at Jesus’ feet, he pleaded ⁵  with him to come to his house,

and forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins ¹  against us. And do not lead us into temptation.” ² 

When he went out from there, the experts in the law ¹  and the Pharisees began to oppose him bitterly, ²  and to ask him hostile questions ³  about many things,

Jesus ¹  also said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who was informed of accusations ²  that his manager ³  was wasting ⁴  his assets.

For just like the lightning flashes ¹  and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his day. ² 

People ¹  were eating, ²  they were drinking, they were marrying, they were being given in marriage – right up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then ³  the flood came and destroyed them all. ⁴ 

So ¹  they asked him, ²  “Teacher, when will these things ³  happen? And what will be the sign that ⁴  these things are about to take place?”

And when you hear of wars and rebellions, ¹  do not be afraid. ²  For these things must happen first, but the end will not come at once.” ³ 

So ¹  every day Jesus ²  was teaching in the temple courts, ³  but at night he went and stayed ⁴  on the Mount of Olives. ⁵ 

Day after day when I was with you in the temple courts, ¹  you did not arrest me. ²  But this is your hour, ³  and that of the power ⁴  of darkness!”

For this is certain: ¹  The days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore children, and the breasts that never nursed!’ ² 

But we had hoped ¹  that he was the one who was going to redeem ²  Israel. Not only this, but it is now the third day since these things happened.
