Total darkness waits to receive his treasures; ¹  a fire which has not been kindled ²  will consume him and devour what is left in his tent.

For my life nears its end in pain; my years draw to a close as I groan. ¹  My strength fails me because of ²  my sin, and my bones become brittle. ³ 

Even the wild animals ¹  cry out to you; ²  for the river beds ³  have dried up; fire has destroyed ⁴  the grassy pastures. ⁵ 

When Israel had finished killing all the men ¹  of Ai who had chased them toward the desert ²  (they all fell by the sword), ³  all Israel returned to Ai and put the sword to it.

One of his advisers replied, “Pick some men and have them take five of the horses that are left in the city. (Even if they are killed, their fate will be no different than that of all the Israelite people – we’re all going to die!) ¹  Let’s send them out so we can know for sure what’s going on.” ² 

They will die of deadly diseases. No one will mourn for them. They will not be buried. Their dead bodies will lie like manure spread on the ground. They will be killed in war or die of starvation. Their corpses will be food for the birds and wild animals.

So the Lord’s anger was kindled against the Israelites, and he made them wander in the wilderness for forty years, until all that generation that had done wickedly before ¹  the Lord was finished. ² 

I proceeded through the Valley Gate by night, in the direction of the Well of the Dragons ¹  and the Dung Gate, ²  inspecting ³  the walls of Jerusalem that had been breached and its gates that had been destroyed by fire.

“As for those who consecrate and ritually purify themselves so they can follow their leader and worship in the sacred orchards, ¹  those who eat the flesh of pigs and other disgusting creatures, like mice ²  – they will all be destroyed together,” ³  says the Lord.

(17:28) ¹  Anyone who even comes close to the tabernacle of the Lord will die! Are we all to die?” ² 

The king longed ¹  to go to Absalom, for he had since been consoled over the death of Amnon. ² 

For the company of the godless is barren, ¹  and fire ²  consumes the tents of those who accept bribes. ³ 

For it is a fire that devours even to Destruction, ¹  and it would uproot ²  all my harvest.

His flesh wastes away from sight, and his bones, which were not seen, are easily visible. ¹ 

Have mercy on me, for I am in distress! My eyes grow dim ¹  from suffering. ²  I have lost my strength. ³ 

The one who sows ¹  iniquity will reap trouble, and the rod of his fury ²  will end.

The words of a wise person ¹  win him ²  favor, ³  but the words ⁴  of a fool are self-destructive. ⁵ 

His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal ¹  for your house will devour me.” ² 

It must be eaten on the day of your sacrifice and on the following day, ¹  but what is left over until the third day must be burned up. ² 

But now, why should we die, because this intense fire will consume us! If we keep hearing the voice of the Lord our God we will die!
