Then someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine,<n id="1" /> put it on a stick,<n id="2" /> and gave it to him to drink, saying, &#8220;Leave him alone! Let&#8217;s see if Elijah will come to take him down!&#8221;

Now when the centurion,<n id="1" /> who stood in front of him, saw how he died,<n id="2" /> he said, &#8220;Truly this man was God&#8217;s Son!&#8221;

There were also women, watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses,<n id="1" /> and Salome.

<t /><p class="bodytext">They were on the way, going up to Jerusalem.<n id="1" /> Jesus was going ahead of them, and they were amazed, but those who followed were afraid. He took the twelve aside again and began to tell them what was going to happen to him.

But as the man<n id="1" /> went out he began to announce it publicly and spread the story widely, so that Jesus<n id="2" /> was no longer able to enter any town openly but stayed outside in remote places. Still<n id="3" /> they kept coming<n id="4" /> to him from everywhere.p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">Now<n id="1" /> John&#8217;s<n id="2" /> disciples and the Pharisees<n id="3" /> were fasting.<n id="4" /> So<n id="5" /> they came to Jesus<n id="6" /> and said, &#8220;Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples don&#8217;t fast?&#8221;

No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise, the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and the tear becomes worse.

And no one pours new wine into old wineskins;<n id="1" /> otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the skins will be destroyed. Instead new wine is poured into new wineskins.&#8221;<n id="2" />p>

These are the ones on the path where the word is sown: Whenever they hear, immediately Satan<n id="1" /> comes and snatches the word<n id="2" /> that was sown in them.

And they began making fun of him.<n id="1" /> But he put them all outside<n id="2" /> and he took the child&#8217;s father and mother and his own companions<n id="3" /> and went into the room where the child was.<n id="4" />

When his daughter Herodias<n id="1" /> came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl, &#8220;Ask me for whatever you want and I will give it to you.&#8221;

But he answered them,<n id="1" /> &#8220;You<n id="2" /> give them something to eat.&#8221; And they said, &#8220;Should we go and buy bread for two hundred silver coins<n id="3" /> and give it to them to eat?&#8221;

But after turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, &#8220;Get behind me, Satan. You are not setting your mind on God&#8217;s interests, but on man&#8217;s.&#8221;<n id="1" />p>

For whoever wants to save his life<n id="1" /> will lose it,<n id="2" /> but whoever loses his life for my sake and for the gospel will save it.

He said to them, &#8220;Elijah does indeed come first, and restores all things. And why is it written that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be despised?

<p class="bodytext">Now when Jesus saw that a crowd was quickly gathering, he rebuked<n id="1" /> the unclean spirit,<n id="2" /> saying to it, &#8220;Mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.&#8221;

But Jesus said, &#8220;Do not stop him, because no one who does a miracle in my name will be able soon afterward to say anything bad about me.

But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, &#8220;Let the little children come to me and do not try to stop them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.<n id="1" />

But Jesus said to them, &#8220;You don&#8217;t know what you are asking! Are you able to drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I experience?&#8221;<n id="1" />

Then he began to teach<n id="1" /> them and said, &#8220;Is it not written: &#8216;<b><i>My house will be called a house of prayer for all nationsi>b>&#8217;?<n id="2" /> But you have turned it into <b><i>a deni>b><n id="3" /> <b><i>of robbersi>b>!&#8221;<n id="4" />
