for he was teaching his disciples and telling them, &#8220;The Son of Man will be betrayed into the hands of men.<n id="1" /> They<n id="2" /> will kill him,<n id="3" /> and after three days he will rise.&#8221;<n id="4" />

<p class="bodytext">&#8220;If anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a huge millstone<n id="1" /> tied around his neck and to be thrown into the sea.

<t /><p class="bodytext">Then<n id="1" /> Jesus<n id="2" /> left that place and went to the region of Judea and<n id="3" /> beyond the Jordan River.<n id="4" /> Again crowds gathered to him, and again, as was his custom, he taught them.

The disciples were astonished at these words. But again Jesus said to them,<n id="1" /> &#8220;Children, how hard it is<n id="2" /> to enter the kingdom of God!

&#8220;Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and experts in the law.<n id="1" /> They will condemn him to death and will turn him over to the Gentiles.

<t /><p class="bodytext">They came to Jericho.<n id="1" /> As Jesus<n id="2" /> and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus the son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the road.

He called his disciples and said to them, &#8220;I tell you the truth,<n id="1" /> this poor widow has put more into the offering box<n id="2" /> than all the others.<n id="3" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">&#8220;But when you see <i>the abomination of desolationi><n id="1" /> standing where it should not be (let the reader understand), then those in Judea must flee<n id="2" /> to the mountains.

He sent two of his disciples and told them, &#8220;Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar<n id="1" /> of water will meet you. Follow him.

And Peter had followed him from a distance, up to the high priest&#8217;s courtyard. He<n id="1" /> was sitting with the guards<n id="2" /> and warming himself by the fire.

Around three o&#8217;clock<n id="1" /> Jesus cried out with a loud voice, &#8220;<i>Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?i>&#8221; which means, &#8220;<b><i>My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?i>b>&#8221;<n id="2" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">They were on the way, going up to Jerusalem.<n id="1" /> Jesus was going ahead of them, and they were amazed, but those who followed were afraid. He took the twelve aside again and began to tell them what was going to happen to him.

I tell you the truth,<n id="1" /> if someone says to this mountain, &#8216;Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,&#8217; and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.

When they came they said to him, &#8220;Teacher, we know that you are truthful and do not court anyone&#8217;s favor, because you show no partiality<n id="1" /> but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.<n id="2" /> Is it right<n id="3" /> to pay taxes<n id="4" /> to Caesar<n id="5" /> or not? Should we pay or shouldn&#8217;t we?&#8221;

He came a third time and said to them, &#8220;Are you still sleeping and resting?<n id="1" /> Enough of that!<n id="2" /> The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
