<p class="bodytext">When Phinehas the priest and the community leaders and clan leaders who accompanied him heard the defense of the Reubenites, Gadites, and the Manassehites,<n id="1" /> they were satisfied.<n id="2" />

<p class="bodytext">Phinehas, son of Eleazar, the priest, and the leaders left the Reubenites and Gadites in the land of Gilead and reported back to the Israelites in the land of Canaan.<n id="1" />

Joshua told all the people, &#8220;Here is what the <sc>Lordsc> God of Israel says: &#8216;In the distant past your ancestors<n id="1" /> lived beyond the Euphrates River,<n id="2" /> including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor. They worshiped<n id="3" /> other gods,

Israel worshiped<n id="1" /> the <sc>Lordsc> throughout Joshua&#8217;s lifetime and as long as the elderly men who outlived him remained alive.<n id="2" /> These men had experienced firsthand everything the <sc>Lordsc> had done for Israel.<n id="3" />p>

<p class="bodytext">The bones of Joseph, which the Israelites had brought up from Egypt, were buried at Shechem in the part of the field that Jacob bought from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, for one hundred pieces of money.<n id="1" /> So it became the inheritance of the tribe of Joseph.<n id="2" />p>

Indeed, for forty years the Israelites traveled through the desert until all the men old enough to fight when they left Egypt, the ones who had disobeyed the <sc>Lordsc>, died off.<n id="1" /> For the <sc>Lordsc> had sworn a solemn oath to them that he would not let them see the land he had sworn on oath to give them,<n id="2" /> a land rich in<n id="3" /> milk and honey.

Then Joshua and all Israel took Achan, son of Zerah, along with the silver, the robe, the bar of gold, his sons, daughters, ox, donkey, sheep, tent, and all that belonged to him and brought them up to the Valley of Disaster.<n id="1" />

When they brought the kings out to Joshua, he<n id="1" /> summoned all the men of Israel and said to the commanders of the troops who accompanied him, &#8220;Come here<n id="2" /> and put your feet on the necks of these kings.&#8221; So they came up<n id="3" /> and put their feet on their necks.

So now, look, the <sc>Lordsc> has preserved my life, just as he promised, these past forty-five years since the <sc>Lordsc> spoke these words to Moses, during which Israel traveled through the wilderness. Now look, I am today eighty-five years old.

So the Reubenites, Gadites, and half-tribe of Manasseh left the Israelites in Shiloh in the land of Canaan and headed home to their own land in Gilead,<n id="1" /> which they acquired by the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s command through Moses.p>

Phinehas, son of Eleazar, the priest, said to the Reubenites, Gadites, and the Manassehites,<n id="1" /> &#8220;Today we know that the <sc>Lordsc> is among us, because you have not disobeyed the <sc>Lordsc> in this.<n id="2" /> Now<n id="3" /> you have rescued the Israelites from the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s judgment.&#8221;<n id="4" />p>
