<p class="bodytext">Then Saul instructed his servants, &#8220;Tell David secretly, &#8216;The king is pleased with you, and all his servants like you. So now become the king&#8217;s son-in-law.&#8221;

He risked his life<n id="1" /> when he struck down the Philistine and the <sc>Lordsc> gave all Israel a great victory. When you saw it, you were happy. So why would you sin against innocent blood by putting David to death for no reason?&#8221;p>

Then Jonathan called David and told him all these things. Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he served him as he had done formerly.<n id="1" />p>

<p class="bodytext">Now David had run away and escaped. He went to Samuel in Ramah and told him everything that Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel went and stayed at Naioth.

If your father happens to miss me, you should say, &#8216;David urgently requested me to let him go<n id="1" /> to his city Bethlehem,<n id="2" /> for there is an annual sacrifice there for his entire family.&#8217;

For as long as<n id="1" /> this son of Jesse is alive on the earth, you and your kingdom will not be established. Now, send some men<n id="2" /> and bring him to me. For he is as good as dead!&#8221;<n id="3" />p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">But Saul found out the whereabouts of David and the men who were with him.<n id="1" /> Now Saul was sitting at Gibeah under the tamarisk tree at an elevated location with his spear in hand and all his servants stationed around him.

For all of you have conspired against me! No one informs me<n id="1" /> when my own son makes an agreement with this son of Jesse! Not one of you feels sorry for me or informs me that my own son has commissioned my own servant to hide in ambush against me, as is the case today!&#8221;p>

Then David said to Abiathar, &#8220;I knew that day when Doeg the Edomite was there that he would certainly tell Saul! I am guilty<n id="1" /> of all the deaths in your father&#8217;s house!

Now I hear that they are shearing sheep for you. When your shepherds were with us, we neither insulted them nor harmed them the whole time they were in Carmel.

So David took the spear and the jug of water by Saul&#8217;s head, and they got out of there. No one saw them or was aware of their presence or woke up. All of them were asleep, for the <sc>Lordsc> had caused a deep sleep to fall on them.p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">David thought to himself,<n id="1" /> &#8220;One of these days I&#8217;m going to be swept away by the hand of Saul! There is nothing better for me than to escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will despair of searching for me through all the territory of Israel and I will escape from his hand.&#8221;p>

Neither man nor woman would David leave alive so as to bring them back to Gath. He was thinking, &#8220;This way they can&#8217;t tell on us, saying, &#8216;This is what David did.&#8217;&#8221; Such was his practice the entire time<n id="1" /> that he lived in the country of the Philistines.

David replied to Achish, &#8220;That being the case, you will come to know what your servant can do!&#8221; Achish said to David, &#8220;Then I will make you my bodyguard<n id="1" /> from now on.&#8221;<n id="2" />p>

David was very upset, for the men<n id="1" /> were thinking of stoning him;<n id="2" /> each man grieved bitterly<n id="3" /> over his sons and daughters. But David drew strength from the <sc>Lordsc> his God.p>

But all the evil and worthless men among those who had gone with David said, &#8220;Since they didn&#8217;t go with us,<n id="1" /> we won&#8217;t give them any of the loot we retrieved! They may take only their wives and children. Let them lead them away and be gone!&#8221;p>
