But as for you, remain here with me so I can declare to you all the commandments,<n id="1" /> statutes, and ordinances that you are to teach them, so that they can carry them out in the land I am about to give them.&#8221;<n id="2" />

houses filled with choice things you did not accumulate, hewn out cisterns you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant &#8211; and you eat your fill,

<t /><p class="bodytext">You must destroy<n id="1" /> all the people whom the <sc>Lordsc> your God is about to deliver over to you; you must not pity them or worship<n id="2" /> their gods, for that will be a snare to you.

<t /><p class="bodytext">You must keep carefully all these commandments<n id="1" /> I am giving<n id="2" /> you today so that you may live, increase in number,<n id="3" /> and go in and occupy the land that the <sc>Lordsc> promised to your ancestors.<n id="4" />

Remember the whole way by which he<n id="1" /> has brought you these forty years through the desert<n id="2" /> so that he might, by humbling you, test you to see if you have it within you to keep his commandments or not.

So he humbled you by making you hungry and then feeding you with unfamiliar manna.<n id="1" /> He did this to teach you<n id="2" /> that humankind<n id="3" /> cannot live by bread<n id="4" /> alone, but also by everything that comes from the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s mouth.<n id="5" />

Then I again fell down before the <sc>Lordsc> for forty days and nights; I ate and drank nothing because of all the sin you had committed, doing such evil before the <sc>Lordsc> as to enrage him.

<t /><p class="bodytext">Now pay attention to all the commandments<n id="1" /> I am giving<n id="2" /> you today, so that you may be strong enough to enter and possess the land where you are headed,<n id="3" />

For if you carefully observe all of these commandments<n id="1" /> I am giving you<n id="2" /> and love the <sc>Lordsc> your God, live according to his standards,<n id="3" /> and remain loyal to him,

Every place you set your foot<n id="1" /> will be yours; your border will extend from the desert to Lebanon and from the River (that is, the Euphrates) as far as the Mediterranean Sea.<n id="2" />

Nobody will be able to resist you; the <sc>Lordsc> your God will spread the fear and terror of you over the whole land on which you walk, just as he promised you.p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">These are the statutes and ordinances you must be careful to obey as long as you live in the land the <sc>Lordsc>, the God of your ancestors,<n id="1" /> has given you to possess.<n id="2" />

Then you must come to the place the <sc>Lordsc> your God chooses for his name to reside, bringing<n id="1" /> everything I am commanding you &#8211; your burnt offerings, sacrifices, tithes, the personal offerings you have prepared,<n id="2" /> and all your choice votive offerings which you devote to him.<n id="3" />

Pay careful attention to all these things I am commanding you so that it may always go well with you and your children after you when you do what is good and right in the sight of the <sc>Lordsc> your God.p>

You must not worship the <sc>Lordsc> your God the way they do!<n id="1" /> For everything that is abhorrent<n id="2" /> to him,<n id="3" /> everything he hates, they have done when worshiping their gods. They even burn up their sons and daughters before their gods!p>

you must by all means<n id="1" /> slaughter the inhabitants of that city with the sword; annihilate<n id="2" /> with the sword everyone in it, as well as the livestock.

Thus you must obey the <sc>Lordsc> your God, keeping all his commandments that I am giving<n id="1" /> you today and doing what is right<n id="2" /> before him.<n id="3" />p>

You may not eat any corpse, though you may give it to the resident foreigner who is living in your villages<n id="1" /> and he may eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner. You are a people holy to the <sc>Lordsc> your God. Do not boil a young goat in its mother&#8217;s milk.<n id="2" />p>

In the presence of the <sc>Lordsc> your God you must eat from the tithe of your grain, your new wine,<n id="1" /> your olive oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the place he chooses to locate his name, so that you may learn to revere the <sc>Lordsc> your God always.

This is the nature of the cancellation: Every creditor must remit what he has loaned to another person;<n id="1" /> he must not force payment from his fellow Israelite,<n id="2" /> for it is to be recognized as &#8220;the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s cancellation of debts.&#8221;
