As Saul approached Samuel in the middle of the gate, he said, “Please tell me where the seer’s house is.”p>

He altered his behavior in their presence.<n id="1" /> Since he was in their power,<n id="2" /> he pretended to be insane, making marks on the doors of the gate and letting his saliva run down his beard.p>

The Ammonites marched out and were deployed for battle at the entrance of the city gate, while the men from Aram Zobah, Rehob, Ish-tob, and Maacah were by themselves in the field.p>

The messenger said to David, &#8220;The men overpowered us and attacked us<n id="1" /> in the field. But we forced them to retreat all the way<n id="2" /> to the door of the city gate.

Then the king said to them, &#8220;I will do whatever seems best to you.&#8221;p> <p class="bodytext">So the king stayed beside the city gate, while all the army marched out by hundreds and by thousands.

Elisha replied, &#8220;Hear the word of the <sc>Lordsc>! This is what the <sc>Lordsc> says, &#8216;About this time tomorrow a seah<n id="1" /> of finely milled flour will sell for a shekel and two seahs of barley for a shekel at the gate of Samaria.&#8217;&#8221;

<p class="bodytext">Now four men with a skin disease<n id="1" /> were sitting at the entrance of the city gate. They said to one another, &#8220;Why are we just sitting here waiting to die?<n id="2" />

The prophet told the king, &#8220;Two seahs of barley will sell for a shekel, and a seah of finely milled flour for a shekel; this will happen about this time tomorrow in the gate of Samaria.&#8221;

The messenger came and told Jehu,<n id="1" /> &#8220;They have brought the heads of the king&#8217;s sons.&#8221; Jehu<n id="2" /> said, &#8220;Stack them in two piles at the entrance of the city gate until morning.&#8221;

But the high places were not eliminated; the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense on the high places. He built the Upper Gate to the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s temple.p>

<p class="bodytext">He appointed military officers over the army<n id="1" /> and assembled them in the square at the city gate. He encouraged them,<n id="2" /> saying,

<p class="bodytext">They said to me, &#8220;The remnant that remains from the exile there in the province are experiencing considerable<n id="1" /> adversity and reproach. The wall of Jerusalem lies breached, and its gates have been burned down!&#8221;<n id="2" />p>

<p class="bodytext">I replied to the king, &#8220;O king, live forever! Why would I not appear dejected when the city with the graves of my ancestors<n id="1" /> lies desolate and its gates destroyed<n id="2" /> by fire?&#8221;

<p class="bodytext">Joiada son of Paseah and Meshullam son of Besodeiah worked on the Jeshanah Gate.<n id="1" /> They laid its beams and positioned its doors, its bolts, and its bars.

<p class="bodytext">Malkijah son of Recab, head of the district of Beth Hakkerem, worked on the Dung Gate. He rebuilt it and positioned its doors, its bolts, and its bars.p>

After them Zadok son of Immer worked opposite his house, and after him Shemaiah son of Shecaniah, guard at the East Gate, worked.

After him Malkijah, one of the goldsmiths, worked as far as the house of the temple servants and the traders, opposite the Inspection Gate,<n id="1" /> and up to the room above the corner.

<p class="bodytext">I brought the leaders of Judah up on top of the wall, and I appointed two large choirs to give thanks. One was to proceed<n id="1" /> on the top of the wall southward toward the Dung Gate.

<p class="bodytext">Then the servants of the king who were at the king&#8217;s gate asked Mordecai, &#8220;Why are you violating the king&#8217;s commandment?&#8221;

Yet all of this fails to satisfy me so long as I have to see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king&#8217;s gate.&#8221;p>
