“Speak to the Israelites and tell them, ‘When you cross over the Jordan River ¹  into the land of Canaan,

“‘Then the priest will write these curses on a scroll and then scrape them off into the bitter water. ¹

Why do you frustrate the intent ¹  of the Israelites to cross over into the land which the Lord has given them?

Divide the plunder into two parts, one for those who took part in the war – who went out to battle – and the other for all the community.

If the Lord delights in us, then he will bring us into this land and give it to us – a land that is flowing with milk and honey. ¹ 

‘Because the Lord was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to them, he killed them in the wilderness.’

They and all that they had went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed over them. So they perished from among the community.

So Israel made a vow ¹  to the Lord and said, “If you will indeed deliver ²  this people into our ³  hand, then we will utterly destroy ⁴  their cities.”

They were married into the families of the Manassehites, the descendants of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in the tribe of their father’s family.

and this water that causes the curse will go ¹  into your stomach, and make your abdomen swell and your thigh rot.” ²  Then the woman must say, “Amen, amen.” ³ 

You will by no means enter into the land where ¹  I swore ²  to settle ³  you. The only exceptions are Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

“Let us ¹  pass through your land; ²  we will not turn aside into the fields or into the vineyards, nor will we drink water from any well, but we will go along the King’s Highway until we pass your borders.”

I will strike them with the pestilence, ¹  and I will disinherit them; I will make you into a nation that is greater and mightier than they!”
