Reject a divisive person after one or two warnings.

When I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there.

An elder must be blameless, ¹  the husband of one wife, ²  with faithful children ³  who cannot be charged with dissipation or rebellion.

So communicate these things with the sort of exhortation or rebuke ¹  that carries full authority. ²  Don’t let anyone look down ³  on you.

For the overseer ¹  must be blameless as one entrusted with God’s work, ²  not arrogant, not prone to anger, not a drunkard, not violent, not greedy for gain.

Older women likewise are to exhibit behavior fitting for those who are holy, not slandering, not slaves to excessive drinking, but teaching what is good.

and not pay attention to Jewish myths ¹  and commands of people who reject the truth.

in hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the ages began. ¹ 

Slaves ¹  are to be subject to their own masters in everything, ²  to do what is wanted and not talk back,

They must not slander ¹  anyone, but be peaceable, gentle, showing complete courtesy to all people.

Encourage younger men likewise to be self-controlled, ¹ 

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all people. ¹ 

¹  But “when the kindness of God our Savior and his love for mankind appeared,

They profess to know God but with their deeds they deny him, since they are detestable, disobedient, and unfit for any good deed.

Instead he must be hospitable, devoted to what is good, sensible, upright, devout, and self-controlled.

Older men are to be temperate, dignified, self-controlled, ¹  sound in faith, in love, and in endurance. ² 

In this way ¹  they will train ²  the younger women to love their husbands, to love their children,

But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, ¹  quarrels, and fights about the law, ²  because they are useless and empty.

to be self-controlled, ¹  pure, fulfilling their duties at home, ²  kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the message ³  of God may not be discredited. ⁴ 

and a sound message that cannot be criticized, so that any opponent will be at a loss, ¹  because he has nothing evil to say about us.
