You must not have in your house different measuring containers, ¹  a large and a small one.

You must not have in your bag different stone weights, ¹  a heavy and a light one. ² 

They ¹  must not discriminate in judgment, but hear the lowly ²  and the great alike. Nor should they be intimidated by human beings, for judgment belongs to God. If the matter being adjudicated is too difficult for them, they should bring it before me for a hearing.

May Reuben live and not die, and may his people multiply. ¹ 

As for your sinful thing ¹  that you had made, the calf, I took it, melted it down, ²  ground it up until it was as fine as dust, and tossed the dust into the stream that flows down the mountain.

Then the Lord will scatter you among the peoples and there will be very few of you ¹  among the nations where the Lord will drive you.

There will be very few of you left, though at one time you were as numerous as the stars in the sky, ¹  because you will have disobeyed ²  the Lord your God.

My teaching will drop like the rain, my sayings will drip like the dew, ¹  as rain drops upon the grass, and showers upon new growth.

Then you must affirm before the Lord your God, “A wandering ¹  Aramean ²  was my ancestor, ³  and he went down to Egypt and lived there as a foreigner with a household few in number, ⁴  but there he became a great, powerful, and numerous people.

For this is no idle word for you – it is your life! By this word you will live a long time in the land you are about to cross the Jordan to possess.”
