But God told Shemaiah the prophet, ¹ 

I will humiliate David’s descendants because of this, ¹  but not forever.” ² 

But now, look, Adonijah has become king! But you, ¹  my master the king, are not even aware of it! ² 

But he did not invite Nathan the prophet, Benaiah, the elite warriors, ¹  or his brother Solomon.

But Naboth replied to Ahab, “The Lord forbid that I should sell you my ancestral inheritance.” ¹ 

But now the Lord my God has made me secure on all fronts; there is no adversary or dangerous threat.

But King Solomon will be empowered ¹  and David’s dynasty ²  will endure permanently before the Lord.”

Then Ahaziah son of Ahab said to Jehoshaphat, “Let my sailors join yours in the fleet,” ¹  but Jehoshaphat refused.

But you will not build the temple; your very own son will build the temple for my honor.’ ¹ 

But Rehoboam rejected their advice and consulted the young advisers who served him, with whom he had grown up. ¹ 

But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there not a prophet of the Lord still here, that we may ask him?”

But Micaiah said, “As certainly as the Lord lives, I will say what the Lord tells me to say.”

Throughout the afternoon they were in an ecstatic frenzy, ¹  but there was no sound, no answer, and no response. ² 

The young woman was very beautiful; she became the king’s nurse and served him, but the king did not have sexual relations with her. ¹ 

But he did not invite me – your servant – or Zadok the priest, or Benaiah son of Jehoiada, or your servant Solomon.

The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “Didn’t I tell you he does not prophesy prosperity for me, but disaster?”

Pharaoh said to him, “What do you lack here that makes you want to go to your homeland?” ¹  Hadad replied, ²  “Nothing, but please give me permission to leave.” ³ 

and had warned him about this very thing, so that he would not follow other gods. ¹  But he did not obey ²  the Lord’s command.

But Zadok the priest, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Shimei, Rei, and David’s elite warriors ¹  did not ally themselves ²  with Adonijah.

Elijah said to them: ¹  “I am the only prophet of the Lord who is left, but there are 450 prophets of Baal.
