“In Bethlehem of Judea,” they said, “for it is written this way by the prophet:

Jesus said to him, “Once again it is written: ‘You are not to put the Lord your God to the test.’” ¹ 

But he answered, ¹  “It is written, ‘Man ²  does not live ³  by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” ⁴ 

Then Jesus said to him, “Go away, ¹  Satan! For it is written: ‘You are to worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’” ² 

And he said to them, “It is written, ‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ ¹  but you are turning it into a den ²  of robbers!” ³ 

Above ¹  his head they put the charge against him, ²  which read: ³  “This is Jesus, the king of the Jews.”

and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you’ ¹  and ‘with their hands they will lift you up, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” ² 

This is the one about whom it is written: ‘Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, ¹  who will prepare your way before you.’ ² 

The Son of Man will go as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for him if he had never been born.”

Then Jesus said to them, “This night you will all fall away because of me, for it is written: ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ ¹
