<p class="bodytext">The crowd joined the attack<n id="1" /> against them, and the magistrates tore the clothes<n id="2" /> off Paul and Silas<n id="3" /> and ordered them to be beaten with rods.<n id="4" />

At daybreak<n id="1" /> the magistrates<n id="2" /> sent their police officers,<n id="3" /> saying, &#8220;Release those men.&#8221;

The police officers reported these words to the magistrates. They were frightened when they heard Paul and Silas<n id="1" /> were Roman citizens<n id="2" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">While Peter and John<n id="1" /> were speaking to the people, the priests and the commander<n id="2" /> of the temple guard<n id="3" /> and the Sadducees<n id="4" /> came up<n id="5" /> to them,

Now when the commander<n id="1" /> of the temple guard<n id="2" /> and the chief priests heard this report,<n id="3" /> they were greatly puzzled concerning it,<n id="4" /> wondering what this could<n id="5" /> be.

Then the commander<n id="1" /> of the temple guard<n id="2" /> went with the officers<n id="3" /> and brought the apostles<n id="4" /> without the use of force<n id="5" /> (for they were afraid of being stoned by the people).<n id="6" />p>

When<n id="1" /> they had brought them<n id="2" /> before the magistrates, they said, &#8220;These men are throwing our city into confusion.<n id="3" /> They are<n id="4" /> Jews

The jailer reported these words to Paul, saying,<n id="1" /> &#8220;The magistrates have sent orders<n id="2" /> to release you. So come out now and go in peace.&#8221;<n id="3" />
