You have killed many people in this city; you have filled its streets with corpses.’

They have treated father and mother with contempt ¹  within you; they have oppressed the foreigner among you; they have wronged the orphan and the widow ²  within you.

You have despised my holy things and desecrated my Sabbaths!

Samaria has not committed half the sins you have; you have done more abominable deeds than they did. ¹  You have made your sisters appear righteous with all the abominable things you have done.

By your wisdom and understanding you have gained wealth for yourself; you have amassed gold and silver in your treasuries.

The people of the land have practiced extortion and committed robbery. They have wronged the poor and needy; they have oppressed the foreigner who lives among them and denied them justice. ¹ 

Then you will know that I am the Lord, whose statutes you have not followed and whose regulations you have not carried out. Instead you have behaved according to the regulations of the nations around you!’”

You have not kept charge of my holy things, but you have assigned foreigners ¹  to keep charge of my sanctuary for you.

“I will display my majesty ¹  among the nations. All the nations will witness the judgment I have executed, and the power I have exhibited ²  among them.

This is because you have disheartened the righteous person with lies (although I have not grieved him), and because you have encouraged the wicked person not to turn from his evil conduct and preserve his life.

For they have committed adultery and blood is on their hands. They have committed adultery with their idols, and their sons, whom they bore to me, ¹  they have passed through the fire as food to their idols. ² 

You have not strengthened the weak, healed the sick, bandaged the injured, brought back the strays, or sought the lost, but with force and harshness ¹  you have ruled over them.

“‘See, I strike my hands together ¹  at the dishonest profit you have made, and at the bloodshed ²  they have done among you.

I will make ¹  the land desolate because they have acted unfaithfully, declares the sovereign Lord.”

And everyone ¹  will see that I, the Lord, have burned it; it will not be extinguished.’”

You will fall dead in the open field; for I have spoken, declares the sovereign Lord.

Moreover, they have done this to me: In the very same day ¹  they desecrated my sanctuary and profaned my Sabbaths.

(The cherubim appeared to have the form ¹  of human hands under their wings.)

“Therefore say: ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: Although I have removed them far away among the nations and have dispersed them among the countries, I have been a little ¹  sanctuary for them among the lands where they have gone.’

Your prophets have become like jackals among the ruins, O Israel.
