When he was maligned, he ¹  did not answer back; when he suffered, he threatened ²  no retaliation, ³  but committed himself to God ⁴  who judges justly.

In it ¹  he went and preached to the spirits in prison, ² 

by casting ¹  all your cares ²  on him because he cares for you.

And he must turn away from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it.

He ¹  committed no sin nor was deceit found in his mouth. ² 

He was foreknown ¹  before the foundation of the world but ²  was manifested in these last times ³  for your sake.

or to governors as those he commissions ¹  to punish wrongdoers and praise ²  those who do good.

in that he spends the rest of his time ¹  on earth concerned about the will of God and not human desires.

He ¹  himself bore our sins ²  in his body on the tree, that we may cease from sinning ³  and live for righteousness. By his ⁴  wounds ⁵  you were healed. ⁶ 

They probed ¹  into what person or time ²  the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating when he testified beforehand about the sufferings appointed for Christ ³  and his subsequent glory. ⁴ 

and maintain good conduct ¹  among the non-Christians, ²  so that though ³  they now malign you as wrongdoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God when he appears. ⁴ 

Blessed be ¹  the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he gave us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

¹ Because Christ also suffered ²  once for sins, the just for the unjust, ³  to bring you to God, by being put to death in the flesh but ⁴  by being made alive in the spirit. ⁵ 

And God will exalt you in due time, ¹  if you humble yourselves under his mighty hand ² 

but, like the Holy One who called you, become holy yourselves in all of your conduct,

But if you suffer as a Christian, ¹  do not be ashamed, but glorify ²  God that you bear such a name. ³ 

So, since Christ suffered ¹  in the flesh, you also arm yourselves with the same attitude, because the one who has suffered in the flesh has finished with sin, ² 

If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory, ¹  who is the Spirit of God, ²  rests ³  on you.

So you who believe see ¹  his value, ²  but for those who do not believe, the stone that the builders rejected has become the ³  cornerstone, ⁴ 

For this finds God’s favor, ¹  if because of conscience toward God ²  someone endures hardships in suffering unjustly.
