She said, “The glory has departed from Israel, because the ark of God has been captured.”p>

<p class="bodytext">Now Samuel did not yet know the <sc>Lordsc>; the word of the <sc>Lordsc> had not yet been revealed to him.

Then the <sc>Lordsc> again appeared in Shiloh, for it was in Shiloh that the <sc>Lordsc> had revealed himself to Samuel<n id="1" /> through the word of the <sc>Lordsc>.<n id="2" />

Now the day before Saul arrived, the <sc>Lordsc> had told<n id="1" /> Samuel:

<p class="bodytext">Jonathan replied, &#8220;All right!<n id="1" /> We&#8217;ll go over to these men and fight them.

<t /><p class="bodytext">A man of God came to Eli and said to him, &#8220;This is what the <sc>Lordsc> says: &#8216;Did I not plainly<n id="1" /> reveal myself to your ancestor&#8217;s<n id="2" /> house when they were in Egypt in the house of Pharaoh?

For all of you have conspired against me! No one informs me<n id="1" /> when my own son makes an agreement with this son of Jesse! Not one of you feels sorry for me or informs me that my own son has commissioned my own servant to hide in ambush against me, as is the case today!&#8221;p>

<p class="bodytext">She named the boy Ichabod,<n id="1" /> saying, &#8220;The glory has departed from Israel,&#8221; referring to the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband.

<p class="bodytext">When they<n id="1" /> made themselves known to the Philistine garrison, the Philistines said, &#8220;Look! The Hebrews are coming out of the holes in which they hid themselves.&#8221;

<p class="bodytext">Jonathan<n id="1" /> said to him, &#8220;By no means are you going to die! My father does nothing<n id="2" /> large or small without making me aware of it.<n id="3" /> Why would my father hide this matter from me? It just won&#8217;t happen!&#8221;p>

Jonathan said to David, &#8220;The <sc>Lordsc> God of Israel is my witness.<n id="1" /> I will feel out my father about this time the day after tomorrow. If he is favorably inclined toward David, will I not then send word to you and let you know?<n id="2" />

But if my father intends to do you harm, may the <sc>Lordsc> do all this and more to Jonathan, if I don&#8217;t let you know<n id="1" /> and send word to you so you can go safely on your way.<n id="2" /> May the <sc>Lordsc> be with you, as he was with my father.

Then the king said to the messengers<n id="1" /> who were stationed beside him, &#8220;Turn and kill the priests of the <sc>Lordsc>, for they too have sided<n id="2" /> with David! They knew he was fleeing, but they did not inform me.&#8221; But the king&#8217;s servants refused to harm<n id="3" /> the priests of the <sc>Lordsc>.p>
