“Moab will be crushed. Her children will cry out in distress. ¹ 

At the sound of your captains’ cry the waves will surge; ¹ 

“O earth, do not cover my blood, ¹  nor let there be a secret ²  place for my cry.

The words of the wise are heard in quiet, more than the shouting of a ruler is heard ¹  among fools.

The people of the earth will quake when they hear Babylon has been captured. Her cries of anguish will be heard by the other nations.” ¹ 

Cries of anguish will come from Babylon, the sound of great destruction from the land of the Babylonians.

So the Lord said, “The outcry against ¹  Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so blatant ² 

I was very angry when I heard their outcry and these complaints. ¹ 

“You saw the affliction of our ancestors in Egypt, and you heard their cry at the Red Sea. ¹ 

The one who shuts his ears ¹  to the cry ²  of the poor, he too will cry out and will not be answered. ³ 

Indeed, the cries of distress echo throughout Moabite territory; their wailing can be heard in Eglaim and Beer Elim. ¹ 

Jerusalem will bring me joy, and my people will bring me happiness. ¹  The sound of weeping or cries of sorrow will never be heard in her again.

For people will live in Zion; in Jerusalem ¹  you will weep no more. ²  When he hears your cry of despair, he will indeed show you mercy; when he hears it, he will respond to you. ³ 

Let cries of terror be heard in their houses when you send bands of raiders unexpectedly to plunder them. ¹  For they have virtually dug a pit to capture me and have hidden traps for me to step into.

May that man be like the cities ¹  that the Lord destroyed without showing any mercy. May he hear a cry of distress in the morning and a battle cry at noon.

Now when Mordecai became aware of all that had been done, he ¹  tore his garments and put on sackcloth and ashes. He went out into the city, crying out in a loud ²  and bitter voice.

to establish these days of Purim in their proper times, just as Mordecai the Jew and Queen Esther had established, and just as they had established both for themselves and their descendants, matters pertaining to fasting and lamentation.

My heart cries out because of Moab’s plight, ¹  and for the fugitives ²  stretched out ³  as far as Zoar and Eglath Shelishiyah. For they weep as they make their way up the ascent of Luhith; they loudly lament their demise on the road to Horonaim. ⁴ 

Cries of anguish raised from Heshbon and Elealeh will be sounded as far as Jahaz. ¹  They will be sounded from Zoar as far as Horonaim and Eglath Shelishiyah. For even the waters of Nimrim will be dried up.
