Your life will hang in doubt before you; you will be terrified by night and day and will have no certainty of surviving from one day to the next.<n id="1" />

But you who remained faithful to the <sc>Lordsc> your God are still alive to this very day, every one of you.

<p class="bodytext">&#8220;Look! I have set before you today life and prosperity on the one hand, and death and disaster on the other.

<p class="poetry">For I raise up my hand to heaven,p> <p class="poetry">and say, &#8216;As surely as I live forever,p>

Today I invoke heaven and earth as a witness against you that I have set life and death, blessing and curse, before you. Therefore choose life so that you and your descendants may live!

He<n id="1" /> did not make this covenant with our ancestors<n id="2" /> but with us, we who are here today, all of us living now.

Who is there from the entire human race<n id="1" /> who has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the middle of the fire as we have, and has lived?

He,<n id="1" /> the God who leads you, will expel the nations little by little. You will not be allowed to destroy them all at once lest the wild animals overrun you.

The <sc>Lordsc> your God will also cleanse<n id="1" /> your heart and the hearts of your descendants<n id="2" /> so that you may love him<n id="3" /> with all your mind and being and so that you may live.

<t /><p class="bodytext">Again, however, pay very careful attention,<n id="1" /> lest you forget the things you have seen and disregard them for the rest of your life; instead teach them to your children and grandchildren.

and that you may so revere the <sc>Lordsc> your God that you will keep all his statutes and commandments<n id="1" /> that I am giving<n id="2" /> you &#8211; you, your children, and your grandchildren &#8211; all your lives, to prolong your days.

<t /><p class="bodytext">These are the statutes and ordinances you must be careful to obey as long as you live in the land the <sc>Lordsc>, the God of your ancestors,<n id="1" /> has given you to possess.<n id="2" />

You must not eat any yeast with it; for seven days you must eat bread made without yeast, symbolic of affliction, for you came out of Egypt hurriedly. You must do this so you will remember for the rest of your life the day you came out of the land of Egypt.

It must be with him constantly and he must read it as long as he lives, so that he may learn to revere the <sc>Lordsc> his God and observe all the words of this law and these statutes and carry them out.

I also call on you<n id="1" /> to love the <sc>Lordsc> your God, to obey him and be loyal to him, for he gives you life and enables you to live continually<n id="2" /> in the land the <sc>Lordsc> promised to give to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.&#8221;p>

Then their children, who have not known this law,<n id="1" /> will also hear about and learn to fear the <sc>Lordsc> your God for as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.&#8221;p>

for I know about your rebellion and stubbornness.<n id="1" /> Indeed, even while I have been living among you to this very day, you have rebelled against the <sc>Lordsc>; you will be even more rebellious after my death!<n id="2" />

For this is no idle word for you &#8211; it is your life! By this word you will live a long time in the land you are about to cross the Jordan to possess.&#8221;p>

You<n id="1" /> stood before the <sc>Lordsc> your God at Horeb and he<n id="2" /> said to me, &#8220;Assemble the people before me so that I can tell them my commands.<n id="3" /> Then they will learn to revere me all the days they live in the land, and they will instruct their children.&#8221;
