They said to the whole community of the Israelites, “The land we passed through to investigate is an exceedingly ¹  good land.

(Now the man Moses was very humble, ¹  more so than any man on the face of the earth.)

When Moses told ¹  these things to all the Israelites, the people mourned ²  greatly.

¹ Moses heard the people weeping ²  throughout their families, everyone at the door of his tent; and when the anger of the Lord was kindled greatly, Moses was also displeased. ³ 

But while the meat was still between their teeth, before they chewed it, ¹  the anger of the Lord burned against the people, and the Lord struck the people with a very great plague.

But ¹  the inhabitants ²  are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. Moreover we saw the descendants of Anak there.

And the Moabites were greatly afraid of the people, because they were so numerous. The Moabites were sick with fear because of the Israelites.

For I will honor you greatly, ¹  and whatever you tell me I will do. So come, put a curse on this nation for me.’”

Moses was very angry, and he said to the Lord, “Have no respect ¹  for their offering! I have not taken so much as one donkey from them, nor have I harmed any one of them!”

¹ Now the Reubenites and the Gadites possessed a very large number of cattle. When they saw that the lands of Jazer and Gilead were ideal for cattle, ²
