The Israelites did not attack them because the leaders of the community had sworn an oath to them in the name of the <sc>Lordsc> God of Israel.<n id="1" /> The whole community criticized<n id="2" /> the leaders,

The leaders then added,<n id="1" /> &#8220;Let them live.&#8221; So they became<n id="2" /> woodcutters and water carriers for the whole community, as the leaders had decided.<n id="3" />p>

He was accompanied by ten leaders, one from each of the Israelite tribes, each one a family leader among the Israelite clans.<n id="1" />

Joshua made a peace treaty with them and agreed to let them live. The leaders of the community<n id="1" /> sealed it with an oath.<n id="2" />p>

but all the leaders told the whole community, &#8220;We swore an oath to them in the name of<n id="1" /> the <sc>Lordsc> God of Israel. So now we can&#8217;t hurt<n id="2" /> them!

They went before Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders and said, &#8220;The <sc>Lordsc> told Moses to assign us land among our relatives.&#8221;<n id="1" /> So Joshua<n id="2" /> assigned them land among their uncles, as the <sc>Lordsc> had commanded.<n id="3" />

<p class="bodytext">When Phinehas the priest and the community leaders and clan leaders who accompanied him heard the defense of the Reubenites, Gadites, and the Manassehites,<n id="1" /> they were satisfied.<n id="2" />

<p class="bodytext">Phinehas, son of Eleazar, the priest, and the leaders left the Reubenites and Gadites in the land of Gilead and reported back to the Israelites in the land of Canaan.<n id="1" />

It encompassed<n id="1" /> all the cities of the plain and the whole realm of King Sihon of the Amorites who ruled in Heshbon. Moses defeated him and the Midianite leaders Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba (they were subjects of Sihon and lived in his territory).<n id="2" />
