Hilkiah informed Shaphan the scribe, &#8220;I found the law scroll in the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s temple.&#8221; Hilkiah gave the scroll to Shaphan.

Then Shaphan the scribe told the king, &#8220;Hilkiah the priest has given me a scroll.&#8221; Shaphan read it out loud before the king.

They reserved the burnt offerings and the cattle for the family divisions of the people to present to the <sc>Lordsc>, as prescribed in the scroll of Moses.<n id="1" />

&#8220;Go, seek an oracle from<n id="1" /> the <sc>Lordsc> for me and those who remain in Israel and Judah. Find out about<n id="2" /> the words of this scroll that has been discovered. For the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s fury has been ignited against us,<n id="3" /> because our ancestors<n id="4" /> have not obeyed the word of the <sc>Lordsc> by doing all that this scroll instructs!&#8221;<n id="5" />p>

However, he did not execute their sons. He obeyed the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s commandment as recorded in the law scroll of Moses,<n id="1" /> &#8220;Fathers must not be executed for what their sons do,<n id="2" /> and sons must not be executed for what their fathers do.<n id="3" /> A man must be executed only for his own sin.&#8221;<n id="4" />p>

He wrote letters mocking the <sc>Lordsc> God of Israel and insulting him with these words:<n id="1" /> &#8220;The gods of the surrounding nations could not rescue their people from my power. Neither can Hezekiah&#8217;s god rescue his people from my power.&#8221;<n id="2" />

Shaphan brought the scroll to the king and reported,<n id="1" /> &#8220;Your servants are doing everything assigned to them.

&#8220;This is what the <sc>Lordsc> says: &#8216;I am about to bring disaster on this place and its residents, the details of which are recorded in the scroll which they read before the king of Judah.

The king went up to the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s temple, accompanied by all the people of Judah, the residents of Jerusalem, the priests, and the Levites. All the people were there, from the oldest to the youngest. He read aloud all the words of the scroll of the covenant that had been discovered in the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s temple.

The king stood by his pillar<n id="1" /> and renewed<n id="2" /> the covenant before the <sc>Lordsc>, agreeing to follow<n id="3" /> the <sc>Lordsc> and to obey his commandments, laws, and rules with all his heart and being,<n id="4" /> by carrying out the terms<n id="5" /> of this covenant recorded on this scroll.
