Why haven&#8217;t you obeyed<n id="1" /> the <sc>Lordsc>? Instead you have greedily rushed upon the plunder! You have done what is wrong in the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s estimation.&#8221;<n id="2" />p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">Now the Spirit of the <sc>Lordsc> had turned away from Saul, and an evil spirit<n id="1" /> from the <sc>Lordsc> tormented him.

Then Saul&#8217;s servants said to him, &#8220;Look, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you!&#8221;

So turn and leave<n id="1" /> in peace. You must not do anything that the leaders of the Philistines consider improper!&#8221;<n id="2" />p>

He said to them, &#8220;Why do you behave in this way? For I hear about these evil things from all these<n id="1" /> people.

Then an evil spirit from the <sc>Lordsc> came upon<n id="1" /> Saul. He was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand, while David was playing the lyre.<n id="2" />

If he should then say, &#8216;That&#8217;s fine,&#8217;<n id="1" /> then your servant is safe. But if he becomes very angry, be assured that he has decided to harm me.<n id="2" />

<p class="bodytext">When David realized that Saul was planning to harm him,<n id="1" /> he told Abiathar the priest, &#8220;Bring the ephod!&#8221;

David said to Saul, &#8220;Why do you pay attention when men say, &#8216;David is seeking to do you harm&#8217;?

The man&#8217;s name was Nabal,<n id="1" /> and his wife&#8217;s name was Abigail. She was both wise<n id="2" /> and beautiful, but the man was harsh and his deeds were evil. He was a Calebite.p>

Now be aware of this, and see what you can do. For disaster has been planned for our lord and his entire household.<n id="1" /> He is such a wicked person<n id="2" /> that no one tells him anything!&#8221;p>

He went on to say, &#8220;Why is my lord chasing his servant? What have I done? What wrong have I done?<n id="1" />

<p class="bodytext">When David heard that Nabal had died, he said, &#8220;Praised be the <sc>Lordsc> who has vindicated me and avenged the insult that I suffered from Nabal!<n id="1" /> The <sc>Lordsc> has kept his servant from doing evil, and he has repaid Nabal for his evil deeds.&#8221;<n id="2" /> Then David sent word to Abigail and asked her to become his wife.p>

But keep an eye on it. If it should go up by the way of its own border to Beth Shemesh, then he has brought this great calamity on us. But if that is not the case, then we will know that it was not his hand that struck us; rather, it just happened to us by accident.&#8221;p>

But today you have rejected your God who saves you from all your trouble and distress. You have said, &#8220;No!<n id="1" /> Appoint a king over us.&#8221; Now take your positions before the <sc>Lordsc> by your tribes and by your clans.&#8217;&#8221;p>

Is this not the time of the wheat harvest? I will call on the <sc>Lordsc> so that he makes it thunder and rain. Realize and see what a great sin you have committed before the <sc>Lordsc> by asking for a king for yourselves.&#8221;p>

All the people said to Samuel, &#8220;Pray to the <sc>Lordsc> your God on behalf of us &#8211; your servants &#8211; so we won&#8217;t die, for we have added to all our sins by asking for a king.&#8221;<n id="1" />p>

<p class="bodytext">Then Samuel said to the people, &#8220;Don&#8217;t be afraid. You have indeed sinned.<n id="1" /> However, don&#8217;t turn aside from the <sc>Lordsc>. Serve the <sc>Lordsc> with all your heart.

Let our lord instruct his servants who are here before you to look for a man who knows how to play the lyre. Then whenever the evil spirit from God comes upon you, he can play the lyre<n id="1" /> and you will feel better.&#8221;<n id="2" />
