Now before the spies ¹  went to sleep, Rahab ²  went up ³  to the roof.

When the Israelites heard this, the entire Israelite community assembled at Shiloh to launch an attack against them. ¹ 

They had worn-out, patched sandals on their feet and dressed in worn-out clothes. All their bread ¹  was dry and hard. ² 

Joshua and his whole army caught them by surprise at the Waters of Merom and attacked them. ¹ 

As they fled from Israel on the slope leading down from ¹  Beth Horon, the Lord threw down on them large hailstones from the sky, ²  all the way to Azekah. They died – in fact, more died from the hailstones than the Israelites killed with the sword.

The Israelites were satisfied with their report and gave thanks to God. ¹  They said nothing more about launching an attack to destroy the land in which the Reubenites and Gadites lived. ²
