<p class="bodytext">&#8220;As you continue on from there, you will come to the tall tree of Tabor. At that point three men who are going up to God at Bethel<n id="1" /> will meet you. One of them will be carrying three young goats, one of them will be carrying three round loaves of bread, and one of them will be carrying a container of wine.

David came to Saul and stood before him. Saul liked him a great deal,<n id="1" /> and he became his armor bearer.

<n id="1" /><p class="bodytext">The Philistine kept coming closer to David, with his shield bearer walking in front of him.

Then the men of the garrison said to Jonathan and his armor bearer, &#8220;Come on up to us so we can teach you a thing or two!&#8221;<n id="1" /> Then Jonathan said to his armor bearer, &#8220;Come up behind me, for the <sc>Lordsc> has given<n id="2" /> them into the hand of Israel!&#8221;p>

His armor bearer said to him, &#8220;Do everything that is on your mind.<n id="1" /> Do as you&#8217;re inclined. I&#8217;m with you all the way!&#8221;<n id="2" />p>

When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his own sword and died with him.

Then one day Jonathan son of Saul said to his armor bearer,<n id="1" /> &#8220;Come on, let&#8217;s go over to the Philistine garrison that is opposite us.&#8221; But he did not let his father know.p>

Now Ahijah was carrying<n id="1" /> an ephod. He was the son of Ahitub, who was the brother of Ichabod and a son of Phineas, son of Eli, the priest of the <sc>Lordsc> in Shiloh. The army was unaware that Jonathan had left.p>

<p class="bodytext">Jonathan said to his armor bearer, &#8220;Come on, let&#8217;s go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised men. Perhaps the <sc>Lordsc> will intervene<n id="1" /> for us. Nothing can prevent the <sc>Lordsc> from delivering, whether by many or by a few.&#8221;

<p class="bodytext">Then the king said to Doeg, &#8220;You turn and strike down the priests!&#8221; So Doeg the Edomite turned and struck down the priests. He killed on that day eighty-five<n id="1" /> men who wore the linen ephod.

<p class="bodytext">Saul said to his armor bearer, &#8220;Draw your sword and stab me with it! Otherwise these uncircumcised people will come, stab me, and torture me.&#8221; But his armor bearer refused to do it, because he was very afraid. So Saul took his sword and fell on it.
