You godly ones, shout for joy because of the Lord! It is appropriate for the morally upright to offer him praise.

May praise flow freely from my lips, for you teach me your statutes.

If ¹  God ²  puts no trust in ³  his servants ⁴  and attributes ⁵  folly ⁶  to his angels,

How deserted will that once-famous city ¹  be, that city that was once filled with ²  joy! ³ 

For long ago, in the days of David and Asaph, there had been directors ¹  for the singers and for the songs of praise and thanks to God.

He gave me reason to sing a new song, ¹  praising our God. ²  May many see what God has done, so that they might swear allegiance to him and trust in the Lord! ³ 

For the music director; a psalm of David, a song. Praise awaits you, ²  O God, in Zion. Vows made to you are fulfilled.

Praise the Lord, for it is good to sing praises to our God! Yes, ²  praise is pleasant and appropriate!

He has made his people victorious, ¹  and given all his loyal followers reason to praise – the Israelites, the people who are close to him. ²  Praise the Lord!

Don’t allow him to rest until he reestablishes Jerusalem, ¹  until he makes Jerusalem the pride ²  of the earth.

Sounds of violence ¹  will no longer be heard in your land, or the sounds of ²  destruction and devastation within your borders. You will name your walls, ‘Deliverance,’ and your gates, ‘Praise.’

to strengthen those who mourn in Zion, by giving them a turban, instead of ashes, oil symbolizing joy, ¹  instead of mourning, a garment symbolizing praise, ²  instead of discouragement. ³  They will be called oaks of righteousness, ⁴  trees planted by the Lord to reveal his splendor. ⁵
