On one occasion in Shiloh, after they had finished eating and drinking, Hannah got up. ¹  (Now at the time Eli the priest was sitting in his chair ²  by the doorpost of the Lord’s temple.)

(For this reason, to this very day, neither Dagon’s priests nor anyone else who enters Dagon’s temple step on Dagon’s threshold in Ashdod.)

Then Samuel took a small container of olive oil and poured it on Saul’s ¹  head. Samuel ²  kissed him and said, “The Lord has chosen you ³  to lead his people Israel! You will rule over the Lord’s people and you will deliver them from the power of the enemies who surround them. This will be your sign that the Lord has chosen ⁴  you as leader over his inheritance. ⁵ 

Then Samuel said to Saul, “I was the one the Lord sent to anoint you as king over his people Israel. Now listen to what the Lord says. ¹ 

She was very upset ¹  as she prayed to the Lord, and she was weeping uncontrollably. ² 

When they came down from the high place to the town, Samuel spoke with Saul on the roof.

He had bronze shin guards ¹  on his legs, and a bronze javelin was slung over his shoulders.

The Spirit of God rushed upon Saul when he heard these words, and he became very angry.

Saul was [thirty] ¹  years old when he began to reign; he ruled over Israel for [forty] ²  years.

Now the whole army ¹  entered the forest and there was honey on the ground. ² 

Then Saul struck down the Amalekites all the way from Havilah to ¹  Shur, which is next to Egypt.

So David hid in the field. When the new moon came, the king sat down to eat his meal.

But a messenger came to Saul saying, “Come quickly, for the Philistines have raided the land!”

Then David crossed to the other side and stood on the top of the hill some distance away; there was a considerable distance between them.

When he arrived in Shiloh, Eli was sitting in his chair watching by the side of ¹  the road, for he was very worried ²  about the ark of God. As the man entered the city to give his report, ³  the whole city cried out.

Saul camped by the road on the hill of Hakilah near Jeshimon, but David was staying in the desert. When he realized that Saul had come to the desert to find ¹  him,

This failure on your part isn’t good! ¹  As surely as the Lord lives, you people who have not protected your lord, the Lord’s chosen one, are as good as dead! ²  Now look where the king’s spear and the jug of water that was by his head are!”

Now Hannah was speaking from her heart. Although her lips were moving, her voice was inaudible. Eli therefore thought she was drunk.

Hannah prayed, ¹  “My heart rejoices in the Lord; my horn ²  is exalted high because of the Lord. I loudly denounce ³  my enemies, for I am happy that you delivered me. ⁴ 

Then Elkanah went back home to Ramah. But the boy was serving the Lord under the supervision of ¹  Eli the priest.
