He followed all the sinful practices of his father before him. He was not wholeheartedly devoted to the Lord his God, as his ancestor David had been. ¹ 

Asa did what the Lord approved ¹  like his ancestor ²  David had done.

Solomon sat on his father David’s throne, and his royal authority ¹  was firmly solidified.

Solomon did evil in the Lord’s sight; ¹  he did not remain loyal to ²  the Lord, like his father David had.

Then Solomon passed away ¹  and was buried in the city of his father David. ²  His son Rehoboam replaced him as king. ³ 

He brought the holy items that he and his father had made into the Lord’s temple, including the silver, gold, and other articles. ¹ 

He did evil in the sight of ¹  the Lord. He followed in his father’s footsteps and encouraged Israel to sin. ² 

He removed from the land any male cultic prostitutes who had managed to survive the reign of his father Asa. ¹ 

(Now his father had never corrected ¹  him ²  by saying, “Why do you do such things?” He was also very handsome and had been born right after Absalom. ³ )

Solomon demonstrated his loyalty to the Lord by following ¹  the practices ²  of his father David, except that he offered sacrifices and burned incense on the high places.

Hadad, ¹  who was only a small boy at the time, escaped with some of his father’s Edomite servants and headed for Egypt. ² 

This is what prompted him to rebel against the king: ¹  Solomon built a terrace and he closed up a gap in the wall of the city of his father David. ² 

Asa passed away ¹  and was buried with his ancestors in the city of his ancestor David. His son Jehoshaphat replaced him as king.

Jehoshaphat passed away ¹  and was buried with his ancestors in the city of his ancestor ²  David. His son Jehoram replaced him as king.

He did evil in the sight of ¹  the Lord and followed in the footsteps ²  of his father and mother; like Jeroboam son of Nebat, he encouraged Israel to sin. ³ 

He worshiped and bowed down to Baal, ¹  angering the Lord God of Israel just as his father had done. ² 

When King Solomon finished constructing the Lord’s temple, he ¹  put the holy items that belonged to his father David (the silver, gold, and other articles) in the treasuries of the Lord’s temple.

When Solomon became old, his wives shifted his allegiance to ¹  other gods; he was not wholeheartedly devoted to the Lord his God, as his father David had been. ² 

I am taking the kingdom from him ¹  because they have ²  abandoned me and worshiped the Sidonian goddess Astarte, the Moabite god Chemosh, and the Ammonite god Milcom. They have not followed my instructions ³  by doing what I approve and obeying my rules and regulations, like Solomon’s father David did. ⁴ 

King Rehoboam consulted with the older advisers who had served ¹  his father Solomon when he had been alive. He asked them, ²  “How do you advise me to answer these people?”
