Please let us pass through ¹  your country. We will not pass through the fields or through the vineyards, nor will we drink water from any well. We will go by the King’s Highway; ²  we will not turn to the right or the left until we have passed through your region.’” ³ 

But he said, “You may not pass through.” Then Edom came out against them ¹  with a large and powerful force. ² 

They said to the whole community of the Israelites, “The land we passed through to investigate is an exceedingly ¹  good land.

But Edom said to him, “You will not pass through me, ¹  or I will come out against ²  you with the sword.”

“Let us ¹  pass through your land; ²  we will not turn aside into the fields or into the vineyards, nor will we drink water from any well, but we will go along the King’s Highway until we pass your borders.”

everything that may stand the fire, you are to pass through the fire, ¹  and it will be ceremonially clean, but it must still be purified with the water of purification. Anything that cannot withstand the fire you must pass through the water.

They traveled from Pi-hahiroth, ¹  and passed through the middle of the sea into the wilderness, and went three days’ journey in the wilderness of Etham, and camped in Marah.

No inheritance may pass from tribe to tribe. But every one of the tribes of the Israelites must retain its inheritance.”

Then the Israelites said to him, “We will go along the highway, and if we ¹  or our cattle drink any of your water, we will pay for it. We will only pass through on our feet, without doing anything else.”

But Sihon did not permit Israel to pass through his border; he ¹  gathered all his forces ²  together and went out against Israel into the wilderness. When ³  he came to Jahaz, he fought against Israel.

Then they presented the Israelites with a discouraging ¹  report of the land they had investigated, saying, “The land that we passed through ²  to investigate is a land that devours ³  its inhabitants. ⁴  All the people we saw there ⁵  are of great stature.

And you must tell the Israelites, ‘If a man dies ¹  and has no son, then you must transfer his inheritance to his daughter;

but your servants will cross over, every man armed for war, to do battle in the Lord’s presence, just as my lord says.”

But if they do not cross over with you armed, they must receive possessions among you in Canaan.”

“Speak to the Israelites and tell them, ‘When you have crossed the Jordan into the land of Canaan,

We will cross armed in the Lord’s presence into the land of Canaan, and then the possession of our inheritance that we inherit will be ours on this side of the Jordan River.” ¹ 

“The daughters of Zelophehad have a valid claim. ¹  You must indeed ²  give them possession of an inheritance among their father’s relatives, and you must transfer ³  the inheritance of their father to them.

When he had finished ¹  speaking ²  all these words, the ground that was under them split open,

So Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border; therefore Israel turned away from him.
