As the night was ending, ¹  Jesus came to them walking on the sea. ² 

“Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way by the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles –

As ¹  he was walking by the Sea of Galilee he saw two brothers, Simon (called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea (for they were fishermen). ² 

When he left there, Jesus went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up a mountain, where he sat down.

While in Galilee, he moved from Nazareth ¹  to make his home in Capernaum ²  by the sea, ³  in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali,

And a great storm developed on the sea so that the waves began to swamp the boat. But he was asleep.

And the men ¹  were amazed and said, ²  “What sort of person is this? Even the winds and the sea obey him!” ³ 

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was cast into the sea that caught all kinds of fish.

But ¹  he said to them, “Why are you cowardly, you people of little faith?” Then he got up and rebuked ²  the winds and the sea, ³  and it was dead calm.

“But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, ¹  it would be better for him to have a huge millstone ²  hung around his neck and to be drowned in the open sea. ³ 

“Woe to you, experts in the law ¹  and you Pharisees, hypocrites! You cross land and sea to make one convert, ²  and when you get one, ³  you make him twice as much a child of hell ⁴  as yourselves!

Jesus ¹  answered them, “I tell you the truth, ²  if you have faith and do not doubt, not only will you do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen.

On that day after Jesus went out of the house, he sat by the lake.

When ¹  the disciples saw him walking on the water ²  they were terrified and said, “It’s a ghost!” and cried out with fear.

Meanwhile the boat, already far from land, ¹  was taking a beating from the waves because the wind was against it.

And he said, ¹  “Go!” So ²  they came out and went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep slope into the lake and drowned in the water.

But so that we don’t offend them, go to the lake and throw out a hook. Take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth, you will find a four drachma coin. ¹  Take that and give it to them for me and you.”

After getting into a boat he crossed to the other side and came to his own town. ¹ 

When the disciples went to the other side, they forgot to take bread.

For just as Jonah was in the belly of the huge fish ¹  for three days and three nights, ²  so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights.
