He shot ¹  arrows and scattered them, ²  lightning and routed them. ³ 

I grind them as fine as the dust of the ground; I crush them and stomp on them like clay ¹  in the streets.

I wipe them out and beat them to death; they cannot get up; they fall at my feet.

I chase my enemies and destroy them; I do not turn back until I wipe them out.

The Philistines ¹  abandoned their idols ²  there, and David and his men picked them up.

They cry out, ¹  but there is no one to help them; ²  they cry out to the Lord, ³  but he does not answer them.

So David asked the Lord what he should do. ¹  This time ²  the Lord ³  said to him, “Don’t march straight up. Instead, circle around behind them and come against them opposite the trees. ⁴ 

Later David defeated the Philistines and subdued them. David took Metheg Ammah ¹  from the Philistines. ² 

Furthermore, their two sons are there with them, Zadok’s son Ahimaaz and Abiathar’s son Jonathan. You must send them to me with any information you hear.” ¹ 

He turned them over to the Gibeonites, and they executed them on a hill before the Lord. The seven of them ¹  died ²  together; they were put to death during harvest time – during the first days of the beginning ³  of the barley harvest.

You deliver oppressed ¹  people, but you watch the proud and bring them down. ² 

let seven of his male descendants be turned over to us, and we will execute ¹  them before the Lord in Gibeah of Saul, who was the Lord’s chosen one.” ²  The king replied, “I will turn them over.”

I will establish a place for my people Israel and settle ¹  them there; they will live there and not be disturbed ²  any more. Violent men ³  will not oppress them again, as they did in the beginning

All the people noticed this and it pleased them. ¹  In fact, everything the king did pleased all the people.

So the king summoned the Gibeonites and spoke with them. (Now the Gibeonites were not descendants of Israel; they were a remnant of the Amorites. The Israelites had made a promise to ¹  them, but Saul tried to kill them because of his zeal for the people of Israel and Judah.)

David took the golden shields that belonged to Hadadezer’s servants and brought them to Jerusalem. ¹ 

Your servant ¹  has two sons. When the two of them got into a fight in the field, there was no one present who could intervene. One of them struck the other and killed him.

David then grabbed his own clothes ¹  and tore them, as did all the men who were with him.

He defeated the Moabites. He made them lie on the ground and then used a rope to measure them off. He put two-thirds of them to death and spared the other third. ¹  The Moabites became David’s subjects and brought tribute. ² 

Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz were staying in En Rogel. A female servant would go and inform them, and they would then go and inform King David. It was not advisable for them to be seen going into the city.
