That is, "the descendants," for with the exception of Pharez, none of those here mentioned were his immediate sons. Indeed, the others are mentioned solely to introduce the name of Shobal, whose genealogy the historian intended to trace (1Ch 2:52).

The sons of Judah - A genealogy of this tribe has already been given in the second chapter. It is here introduced again, with some variations. Probably there were different copies in the public registers; and the writer of this book, finding that this second one contained some remarkable particulars, thought proper to insert it in this place: and no reader will regret the insertion, when he carefully considers the matter.

The descendants of Judah (chapters 2-4) and Levi (chapters 6, 9) are given in more detail than those from the other ten tribes. This correlates with the fact that one was the kingly tribe (Gen 49:10) and the other the priestly tribe (Deu 33:8-10). All of these genealogies seem superficially incomplete, sometimes even contradictory and unorganized. No doubt most of the problems could be solved if they had been preserved in complete form. Many different men had identical names in ancient Israel, just as in modern America. These lists were apparently compiled by Ezra the scribe (or at least someone from his time) after the return from the Babylonian captivity, using all the available records he could find still preserved. It was important for him to establish the inheritance of the various families as accurately as possible, since they had originally been given by God in perpetuity (Leviticus 25:23-55). As incomplete as these may have been on the human level, they do give us assurance that God does not forget His promises and that He has kept these genealogies in complete form on the divine level. Furthermore, their inclusion in the divinely inspired Scriptures of the Old Testament (note Paul's testimony in 2Ti 3:16, 2Ti 3:17) assures us that these lists of names are "profitable" to the "man of God." If nothing else, they show us that God does care about all individuals - not just nations or leaders of nations - and these Old Testament records are not just myths or allegories but are real historical records of real people and real events."

Either they are other sons besides those mentioned 1Ch 2 , or there is some variation in their names, which is most frequent among the Hebrews, as hath been oft proved.

Charmi, the great-grandson of Juda, by Zara and Zamri, Josue vii. 1. ---

Junius takes him to be the same with Calubi, (chap. ii.) father of Sobal. This seems to be transcribed from another ancient register of the family of Juda, and designed to shew where the principal men had resided. (Calmet) ---

Jezreel, and Ishma, and Idbash; these were the sons of the governor of Etam:
