1 Kings 8:46-53

Context

8:46 “The time will come when your people 1  will sin against you (for there is no one who is sinless!) and you will be angry with them and deliver them over to their enemies, who will take them as prisoners to their own land, 2  whether far away or close by. 8:47 When your people 3  come to their senses 4  in the land where they are held prisoner, they will repent and beg for your mercy in the land of their imprisonment, admitting, ‘We have sinned and gone astray; 5  we have done evil.’ 8:48 When they return to you with all their heart and being 6  in the land where they are held prisoner, 7  and direct their prayers to you toward the land you gave to their ancestors, your chosen city, and the temple I built for your honor, 8  8:49 then listen from your heavenly dwelling place to their prayers for help 9  and vindicate them. 10  8:50 Forgive all the rebellious acts of your sinful people and cause their captors to have mercy on them. 11  8:51 After all, 12  they are your people and your special possession 13  whom you brought out of Egypt, from the middle of the iron-smelting furnace. 14

Daniel 9:11-19

Context

9:11 “All Israel has broken 21  your law and turned away by not obeying you. 22  Therefore you have poured out on us the judgment solemnly threatened 23  in the law of Moses the servant of God, for we have sinned against you. 24  9:12 He has carried out his threats 25  against us and our rulers 26  who were over 27  us by bringing great calamity on us – what has happened to Jerusalem has never been equaled under all heaven! 9:13 Just as it is written in the law of Moses, so all this calamity has come on us. Still we have not tried to pacify 28  the LORD our God by turning back from our sin and by seeking wisdom 29  from your reliable moral standards. 30  9:14 The LORD was mindful of the calamity, and he brought it on us. For the LORD our God is just 31  in all he has done, 32  and we have not obeyed him. 33 

9:15 “Now, O Lord our God, who brought your people out of the land of Egypt with great power 34  and made a name for yourself that is remembered to this day – we have sinned and behaved wickedly. 9:16 O Lord, according to all your justice, 35  please turn your raging anger 36  away from your city Jerusalem, your holy mountain. For due to our sins and the iniquities of our ancestors, Jerusalem and your people are mocked by all our neighbors.

9:17 “So now, our God, accept 37  the prayer and requests of your servant, and show favor to 38  your devastated sanctuary for your own sake. 39  9:18 Listen attentively, 40  my God, and hear! Open your eyes and look on our desolated ruins 41  and the city called by your name. 42  For it is not because of our own righteous deeds that we are praying to you, 43  but because your compassion is abundant. 9:19 O Lord, hear! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, pay attention, and act! Don’t delay, for your own sake, O my God! For your city and your people are called by your name.” 44

A כּוּר was not a source of heat but a crucible (“iron-smelting furnace”) in which precious metals were melted down and their impurities burned away (see I. Cornelius, NIDOTTE 2:618-19). Thus Egypt served not as a place of punishment for the Israelites, but as a place of refinement to bring Israel to a place of submission to divine sovereignty.

[9:18]  41 tn Heb “desolations.” The term refers here to the ruined condition of Judah’s towns.
