13:13 Then Paul and his companions put out to sea⁸ from Paphos⁹ and came to Perga¹⁰ in Pamphylia,¹¹ but John¹² left them and returned to Jerusalem.¹³

[16:11] ²sn Troas was a port city (and surrounding region) on the northwest coast of Asia Minor. See v. 8.

[16:11] ³tn BDAG 406 s.v. εὐθυδρομέω has “of a ship run a straight course” here; L&N 54.3 has “to sail a straight course, sail straight to.”

[16:11] ⁴sn Samothrace is an island in the northern part of the Aegean Sea.

[16:11] ⁵sn Neapolis was a seaport on the southern coast of Macedonia. It was 10 mi (16 km) from Philippi.

[27:4] ⁶tn Grk “putting out to sea.” The participle ἀναχθέντες (anacqente") has been translated as a finite verb due to requirements of contemporary English style. BDAG 62 s.v. ἀνάγω 4 states, “as a nautical t.t. (ἀ. τὴν ναῦν put a ship to sea), mid. or pass. ἀνάγεσθαι to begin to go by boat, put out to sea.”

[27:4] ⁷tn BDAG 1040 s.v. ὑποπλέω states, “sail under the lee of an island, i.e. in such a way that the island protects the ship fr. the wind Ac 27:4, 7.” Thus they were east and north of the island.

[13:13] ¹⁴sn Pamphylia was a province in the southern part of Asia Minor.

[13:13] ¹⁶sn Returned to Jerusalem. John Mark had originally accompanied them from Jerusalem (see Acts 12:25). John Mark’s decision to leave became an issue later for Barnabas and Paul (Acts 15:36-39).
