Daniel 4:17
Context4:17 This announcement is by the decree of the sentinels;
this decision is by the pronouncement of the holy ones,
so that 1 those who are alive may understand
that the Most High has authority over human kingdoms, 2
and he bestows them on whomever he wishes.
He establishes over them even the lowliest of human beings.’
Daniel 9:18
Context9:18 Listen attentively, 3 my God, and hear! Open your eyes and look on our desolated ruins 4 and the city called by your name. 5 For it is not because of our own righteous deeds that we are praying to you, 6 but because your compassion is abundant.

[4:17] 1 tc The present translation follows an underlying reading of עַל־דִּבְרַת (’al-divrat, “so that”) rather than MT עַד־דִּבְרַת (’ad-divrat, “until”).
[4:17] 2 tn Aram “the kingdom of man”; NASB “the realm of mankind”; NCV “every kingdom on earth.”
[9:18] 3 tn Heb “turn your ear.”
[9:18] 4 tn Heb “desolations.” The term refers here to the ruined condition of Judah’s towns.
[9:18] 5 tn Heb “over which your name is called.” Cf. v. 19. This expression implies that God is the owner of his city, Jerusalem. Note the use of the idiom in 2 Sam 12:28; Isa 4:1; Amos 9:12.
